ISO 3575:2016 is applicable to the requirements for steel sheet, in coils and cut lengths, metallic-coated by the continuous hot-dip process, with zinc and zinc-iron alloy coatings. The product is intended for applications requiring corrosion resistance, formability and paintability. The steel sheet is produced in a number of designations, coating masses, surface treatments and coating conditions designed to be compatible with differing application requirements. ISO 3575:2016 does not cover steels designated as structural quality, which are covered in ISO 4998.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3575:2016 specifies requirements for continuous hot-dip zinc-coated and zinc‑iron alloy‑coated carbon steel sheet supplied in coils and cut lengths. The standard covers products intended for applications requiring corrosion resistance, formability and paintability, produced in multiple designations, coating masses, surface treatments and coating conditions. Structural-quality steels are excluded (see ISO 4998).
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 3575:2016 addresses manufacturing, testing and product description aspects for coated steel sheet, including:
- Conditions of manufacture: steelmaking inputs, chemical composition and analysis (heat and product analysis).
- Mechanical properties: tensile, elongation and fabrication-quality designations (commercial, drawing, deep drawing, interstitial-free).
- Coating requirements: coating mass, coating adherence, differential coating options and coating condition (zinc Z and zinc‑iron ZF).
- Surface treatments: mill passivation, mill phosphating and oiling to improve paintability and handling.
- Weldability and painting: guidance on compatibility with welding and painting processes.
- Dimensional and shape tolerances: specified coil and sheet tolerances and coil size/marking requirements.
- Sampling and test methods: sampling procedures, tensile and coating tests (including triple‑spot and single‑spot tests). Coating mass and thickness measurement methods referenced include gravimetric and non‑destructive methods.
- Designation system and documentation: standard coding for base‑metal quality, coating designation, coating mass, finish condition and surface treatment.
- Inspection, acceptance and workmanship: criteria for final acceptance, retests and resubmission.
Practical applications and typical users
ISO 3575:2016 is used by organizations that specify, produce, procure or fabricate coated steel sheet for corrosion‑resistant and formable applications:
- Steel mills and coating line operators (continuous hot‑dip process)
- OEMs in automotive, appliances, HVAC and electrical enclosures
- Construction, roofing and cladding manufacturers
- Metal fabricators, stampers and deep‑drawing shops
- Procurement/specification engineers and quality inspectors
Using ISO 3575 helps ensure consistent paintability, formability and corrosion performance, and provides a clear designation system for ordering coated sheet.
Related standards
Relevant referenced standards include:

- ISO 6892‑1 (tensile testing), ISO 7438 (bend test)
- ISO 16163 (dimensional and shape tolerances)
- Note: structural steels are covered under ISO 4998, not ISO 3575:2016.
