ISO 3781:2011 specifies a test method for the determination of the wet tensile strength of paper or board after its immersion in water for a specified period. In principle, the method is applicable to both paper and board, provided an appropriate soaking time is agreed between the interested parties. It is not applicable to tissue paper and tissue products other lightweight, highly absorbent paper which is difficult to handle or of low strength when wet (see ISO 12625‑5).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3781:2011 is an International Standard specifying a test method to determine the wet tensile strength of paper and board after immersion in water for a specified period. This method assesses how much tensile force soaked paper or board can withstand before breaking, which is crucial for materials exposed to moisture in their application. The standard applies broadly to paper and board materials, excluding tissue paper and other lightweight, highly absorbent papers, which require different testing methods.
By providing a consistent, repeatable procedure for wet tensile strength measurements, ISO 3781:2011 enables manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and researchers to evaluate the durability and mechanical performance of paper products after water exposure. The standard supports quality assurance and product specification development in the paper industry.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
ISO 3781:2011 applies to paper and board subjected to immersion in water to simulate wet conditions. It excludes tissue papers, which have low wet strength and different handling needs. Soaking time can vary but is typically one hour unless otherwise agreed. -
Test Methodology
The test involves soaking test pieces in distilled or deionized water according to ISO 14487, followed by tensile strength measurement using a tensile testing apparatus operating at a constant rate of elongation (20 mm/min or 100 mm/min). Test pieces are prepared and conditioned following ISO 1924-2 or ISO 1924-3. -
Tensile Strength and Retention Calculations
Results include:- Wet tensile strength (maximum force per unit width) expressed in kilonewtons per meter (kN/m)
- Wet tensile strength retention calculated as a percentage comparing wet to dry tensile strength, indicating how well the paper retains strength after soaking.
-
Precision and Repeatability
Annex A provides precision data based on interlaboratory tests, estimating repeatability and reproducibility limits to ensure test reliability and accuracy. -
Reporting Requirements
The test report must include identification, soaking time, conditioning atmosphere, tensile method used, numerical results, and any deviations or influencing factors.
Applications
ISO 3781:2011 is essential for industries where paper and board products are exposed to moisture or wet conditions, helping to:
-
Evaluate Packaging Materials
Ensure paperboard and packaging retain structural integrity during shipping or storage under humid or wet conditions. -
Develop Paper with Improved Wet Strength
Support R&D efforts to enhance wet strength for specialty papers used in labels, maps, or outdoor products. -
Quality Control
Monitor production consistency and compliance with wet strength specifications to meet customer and regulatory requirements. -
Benchmarking and Material Comparison
Allow manufacturers to compare performance characteristics of different paper grades or treatments under standardized testing.
