Abstract
Overview
ISO 3865:2020 specifies standardized laboratory methods to estimate staining caused by vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber on organic finishes (paints, varnishes, plastics, veneers). The fifth edition defines three test methods - Method A (contact and migration staining), Method B (extraction staining) and Method C (penetration staining) - and provides guidance on sample preparation, apparatus, irradiation and assessment. The standard is intended for reproducible evaluation of rubber-induced staining under heat, light, pressure and in the presence of leached constituents.

- Test pieces and preparation: rectangular rubber samples (typical thickness ~2.0 mm) and coated metal/plastic panels (white acrylic stoving enamel recommended; dried 30 min at 125 °C and tested 24–48 h after drying). Veneers and lacquers for Method C must be light‑coloured and non‑discolouring.
- Assessment: visual inspection, grey scale comparison, or quantitative reflectance spectrometry. Clause 9 covers recommended irradiation intensity, time and surface temperature; Clause 10 covers evaluation procedures.
- Reporting: requirements for test conditions, sample construction and results are specified to ensure traceability and reproducibility.
