This document specifies the common test methods for ISO 4210‑2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4210-3:2023 - "Cycles - Safety requirements for bicycles - Part 3: Common test methods" specifies the common laboratory and bench test methods referenced by ISO 4210‑2 for evaluating bicycle safety. This second-edition document defines how to carry out brake, strength, fatigue, impact and component tests to verify that bicycles and sub‑assemblies meet the performance and durability expectations of the ISO 4210 series.
Key topics
- Scope and linkage: Provides the common test procedures used to support the requirements in ISO 4210‑2 (city/trekking, young adult, mountain and racing bicycles).
- Brake and strength tests: Identifies tests subject to strict tolerances and specifies permissible error ranges (e.g., forces/torques: 0/+5%, masses: ±1%, dimensions: ±1 mm, angles: ±1°, time: ±5 s, temperatures: ±2 °C).
- Specimen handling: Static, impact and fatigue tests should use new samples where possible; if only one sample exists the sequence should be fatigue → static → impact and must be recorded.
- Front mudguard tests:
- Tangential obstruction: apply 160 N upward tangential force with a 12 mm rod for 1 minute.
- Mudguard stays impact: reproduce a 36.8 J impact using a lever/rod arrangement (minimum drop height 100 mm; example m = 10 kg, L ratio provided).
- Wheel‑blocking verification: radial press plus 100 N tangential force for 90° wheel rotation to check for blocking/steering effects.
- Road test: Fully assembled bicycle ridden for at least 1 km at the manufacturer’s permissible total mass; checks steering, brakes, wheel alignment and luggage loading.
- Fatigue and impact:
- Fatigue load cycles applied progressively (≤ 10 Hz); re‑check fastener torque by 1 000 cycles.
- For composite components, initial displacement taken after 1 000–2 000 cycles.
- Vertical impact striker must reach ≥ 95% of free‑fall velocity (see Annex B).
- Material conditioning: Plastic components pre‑conditioned 2 h and tested at 23 °C ± 5 °C.
- Structural integrity (Annex A): Machine test mass setup (e.g., 36 kg seat mass, two 18 kg crank masses, two 6.75 kg handlebar masses), drums 500–1 000 mm diameter, 8 km/h ± 0.8 km/h, at least 100 000 impacts per tyre.
Applications
- Bicycle manufacturers and component suppliers - to design and validate safe products and support internal QA.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized conformity testing for safety certification and compliance.
- Regulators, fleet managers and procurement teams - to specify verifiable safety test methods in tenders and legislation.
- Bicycle designers and R&D - to benchmark durability and safety characteristics during development.
