This document specifies dimensions and tolerances for cylindrical and flanged bushes with internal diameter, d1, in the range 6 mm to 200 mm. It applies to solid mono‑metal copper alloy bushes to be used as plain bearings with and without oil holes and oil grooves.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4379:2018 - Plain bearings - Copper alloy bushes specifies dimensions and tolerances for solid mono‑metal copper alloy bushes used as plain bearings. The standard covers both cylindrical (type C) and flanged (type F) bushes with internal diameters (d1) in the range 6 mm to 200 mm, and applies to bushes with or without oil holes and oil grooves. This third edition (2018) is a minor revision of the earlier edition and aligns dimensions, tolerance classes and designation rules for plain bearing manufacture and design.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Solid mono‑metal copper alloy bushes for plain bearing use; internal diameter range 6–200 mm.
- Dimensions and tolerances: Detailed dimensional tables and figures (Tables 1–3, Figure 1) define inside/outside diameters, widths, chamfers and flange geometry for types C and F. Tolerance classes and fit recommendations (including guidance on IT values, coaxial tolerance and axial runout) are specified.
- Material requirements: References to copper alloy specifications via ISO 4382-1 (cast alloys) and ISO 4382-2 (wrought alloys).
- Surface finish: Surface roughness and edge requirements are to be indicated in accordance with ISO 1302; edges must be burr‑free and slight outer indentations are acceptable if they do not affect fit or function.
- Construction and tolerances: Unspecified dimensions follow general tolerance class “m” per ISO 2768-1; specific chamfer and undercut options to be agreed where noted. Recommended fits are for general machinery - special lubrication regimes (e.g., hydrodynamic) or unconventional housings require verification.
- Quality assurance and designation: Inspection and quality control reference ISO 12301; standard provides rules for designation (example: Bush ISO 4379 - C 20 × 24 × 20 Y - CuSn8P).
Applications and users
ISO 4379 is intended for:
- Bearing manufacturers producing plain copper alloy bushes (cylindrical and flanged).
- Mechanical designers and OEMs specifying bearing components for general machinery, transmission, industrial equipment and rotating assemblies.
- Procurement, quality assurance and maintenance teams requiring clear part designation, dimensional interchangeability and inspection criteria.
- Engineers evaluating fits for pressed or bonded housings or bearings operating in hydrodynamic lubrication regimes (recommend fit verification).
Practical benefits include standardized interchangeability, clearer manufacturing tolerances, predictable assembly fits and improved procurement specifications.
