This document specifies performance requirements for compact laminate (defined in Clause 4) of thickness 2 mm or greater intended for interior use. ISO 4586‑2 specifies the methods of test relevant to this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4586-4:2018 defines classification and performance specifications for high-pressure decorative compact laminates (HPL, HPDL) of thickness 2 mm and greater intended for interior use. It sets out inspection, dimensional and physical performance requirements for compact laminates (sheets made from layers of cellulosic fibre impregnated with thermosetting resins produced by the high‑pressure process). Test methods referenced in this part are given in ISO 4586‑2:2018.

- Compact laminates are classified using a three-letter code (e.g. HPL/ISO 4586‑4/CGS for standard compact grade; CGF for flame‑retardant grade).
- Inspection and visual quality
- Visual inspection is carried out at a distance of 0.75 m to 1.5 m. Colour matching is checked under daylight/D65 and tungsten A illumination. Surface‑finish compatibility should be checked before fabrication where critical.

- Straightness, squareness and flatness limits are specified and vary with thickness.
