Specification of two methods for the determination of chlorine: Oxidation of the test portion with sodium peroxide (method A) in a Parr bomb or with gaseous oxygen (method B) in a flask, followed by electrometric or volumetric titration of the resulting chlorides. Blank tests shall be carried out by using the same quanities of reagents as in the determination.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4615:1979 establishes standardized methods for determining the total chlorine content in unsaturated polyester resins and epoxide (epoxy) resins. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard specifies two combustion-based analytical techniques-one utilizing a sodium peroxide combustion bomb (Method A), and the other using gaseous oxygen in a flask (Method B). Both methods involve subsequent titration for precise quantification of the resulting chlorides. ISO 4615:1979 ensures reliable, reproducible results essential for quality control, compliance, and regulatory purposes in plastics manufacturing and related industries.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines procedures for measuring total chlorine content in unsaturated polyesters and epoxides, excluding cases where chlorine is present as an impurity in epoxy resins.
- Test Methods:
- Method A (Bomb Combustion): Oxidation using sodium peroxide in a combustion bomb, suitable for both solid and liquid samples.
- Method B (Oxygen Flask Combustion): Uses gaseous oxygen in a round-bottomed flask, with combustion aided by a platinum wire and filter paper.
- Quantification: Chlorine is determined via electrometric or volumetric titration, commonly using standardized silver nitrate solution.
- Blank Tests: Essential for accuracy, blank determinations are carried out alongside sample testing with identical reagent quantities.
- Sample Preparation: Solid samples must be powdered or granulated; liquid samples need meticulous handling to ensure representative results.
- Reporting: Results are expressed as percentage by mass and reported as the arithmetic mean of two consistent determinations.
Applications
ISO 4615:1979 holds critical value for industries and laboratories engaged in:
- Quality Control: Ensuring resin compositions meet specification limits for chlorine content, thereby confirming material quality and performance.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supporting manufacturers in demonstrating adherence to legal or customer-driven thresholds for halogen content in plastics.
- Research and Development: Applied in developing new resin formulations with controlled chlorine levels to optimize properties and minimize environmental impact.
- Supplier-Purchaser Agreements: Providing a mutually recognized reference method for resolving disputes or verifying product conformity.
- Environmental Safety: Monitoring chlorine levels helps mitigate risks related to halogenated byproducts during processing or disposal.
Related Standards
For comprehensive chemical analysis and characterization of plastics, the following ISO standards are commonly referenced alongside ISO 4615:
- ISO 1833: Textiles - Quantitative chemical analysis
- ISO 11487: Plastics - Determination of chlorine content in PVC
- ISO 2559: Plastics - Resins in the liquid state or as emulsions or dispersions - Determination of apparent viscosity
- ISO 9001: Quality management systems - Requirements (for laboratory quality assurance)
- ISO 3506: Mechanical properties of corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners (relevant where resin formulations are used in conjunction)
Practical Value
By implementing ISO 4615:1979, organizations benefit from:
- Consistent Data: Using standardized procedures minimizes variability and enhances comparability of test results across laboratories worldwide.
- Material Verification: Protects against non-compliant or substandard resin batches entering production lines.
- Audit Trail: Facilitates traceable test records required for audits and certifications.
Adopting ISO 4615:1979 strengthens product reliability, supports innovation, and safeguards environmental and market requirements for plastics manufacturers and users globally.
