This document is applicable to the minimum requirements for steel sheet, in coils and cut lengths, metallic-coated by the continuous hot-dip process, with aluminium-silicon alloy coating. The product is intended for heat-resisting applications and also where both corrosion and heat resistance are required. The steel sheet is produced in a number of quality designations and grades, coating mass, surface treatments and coating finish conditions to be compatible with differing application requirements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5000:2019 defines the minimum requirements for steel sheet metallic-coated by the continuous hot-dip process with an aluminium‑silicon alloy coating. The standard covers sheet supplied in coils and cut lengths, intended for heat‑resisting applications and for uses where both corrosion and heat resistance are needed. It specifies product grades, coating mass, surface treatments and finish conditions to match differing application needs.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material scope and dimensions: Aluminium‑silicon alloy‑coated steel sheet produced in thicknesses from 0.40 mm to 3.0 mm and widths 600–1500 mm (sheet <600 mm considered slit sheet).
- Base‑metal qualities: Definitions and requirements for commercial, drawing, deep drawing, interstitial‑free (IF) and other formability grades.
- Coating: Requirements for silicon content, coating mass (total g/m² both sides), coating adherence, differential coatings and normal spangle finish.
- Mechanical and fabrication properties: Tensile properties, bend tests, weldability and skin‑pass effects on formability.
- Surface treatments and finish: Mill passivation, oiling, and coating finish conditions (e.g., smooth finish produced by skin‑pass).
- Testing and sampling: Sampling plans and test methods including tensile testing (ISO 6892‑1), coating mass measurement, single‑spot and triple‑spot tests, and coating adherence procedures.
- Designation and marking: System for specifying coating type, mass, base‑metal quality and finish, plus purchaser information, coil size, workmanship, inspection and acceptance criteria.
- Normative references: Linked test and procedural standards such as ISO 6892‑1, ISO 7438, ISO 16163, and ISO 6353.
Practical applications
ISO 5000:2019 is used wherever aluminium‑silicon alloy‑coated steel sheet is required for elevated temperature or combined corrosion/heat environments. The standard helps ensure consistent product selection and quality for:
- Heat‑resisting components and assemblies
- Applications requiring enhanced corrosion protection at moderate temperatures
- Fabrication processes that include bending, drawing or deep drawing
Who should use this standard
- Steel producers and coating mills specifying and producing aluminium‑silicon alloy‑coated sheet
- OEMs and fabricators selecting coil or cut lengths for heat‑resisting parts
- Purchasing/specification engineers writing procurement requirements
- Quality, inspection and testing laboratories conducting coating and mechanical tests
