ISO 5006:2017 specifies a static test method for determining and evaluating the operator's field of view on a rectangular boundary around the machine and on a 12 m visibility test circle (VTC). It is applicable to the earth-moving machines as defined in ISO 6165 that have a seated operator, and which are intended to operate on work sites and travel on public roads. It provides visibility performance criteria for machines up to the maximum operating mass according to ISO 6016, depending on the type of machine family listed in Table 1. For those machines not listed ? including larger machines, derivative and other types of earth-moving machinery ? the visibility test procedures can be used along with the risk assessment process defined in 10.4.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 5006:2017 at a glance
ISO 5006:2017 - "Earth-moving machinery - Operator’s field of view - Test method and performance criteria" defines a static test method and measurable performance criteria for assessing an operator’s field of view on earth‑moving machines with a seated operator. The standard uses two light sources placed at the operator eye location (filament position centre point, FPCP) to determine visibility on a 12 m visibility test circle (VTC) and along a rectangular boundary (RB) located 1 m from the machine perimeter. It applies to machine families defined in ISO 6165 up to the maximum operating mass per ISO 6016; other or larger machines use the test procedures together with the risk‑assessment process in clause 10.4.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test method: Static measurements using twin light bulbs at the operator eye position (FPCP) to map shadows ("maskings") on the VTC and RB.
- Visibility zones: The area around the machine is divided into six sectors (A–F) to evaluate front, side and rear visibility.
- Human factors: Nominal binocular eye spacing of 65 mm is used; allowed eye‑spacing adjustments up to 405 mm (front sectors) and 205 mm (rear sectors) account for head/torso movement.
- Masking criteria: Maskings caused by the machine, attachments or ROPS are quantified; a 300 mm masking dimension on the RB approximates chest depth for nearby personnel. Multiple maskings are allowed if adequately spaced.
- Indirect visibility aids: Rules and performance criteria for mirrors and CCTV systems (with preferred use for RB) are included to mitigate inadequate direct view.
- Reporting & documentation: Test report requirements and suggested visibility information to be included in the operator’s manual.
- Risk assessment: For machines not listed in Table 1/2 (e.g., larger or derivative types), test procedures are used with a documented risk assessment (10.4).
Practical applications - who uses ISO 5006:2017
- OEMs and design engineers: to evaluate and optimize cab layout, glazing, ROPS and attachment layouts for improved operator visibility.
- Safety engineers & compliance officers: to quantify blind spots, validate indirect aids (mirrors/CCTV) and meet safety specifications.
- Certification bodies & test labs: for repeatable, objective visibility testing and performance comparison across machine families.
- Fleet managers & procurement: to compare machines on operator visibility metrics and reduce site incident risk.
- Jobsite planners & trainers: to incorporate visibility limitations into jobsite organization and operator procedures.
