ISO 52022-1:2017 specifies a simplified method based on thermal, solar and light characteristics of the glazing and solar and light characteristics of the solar protection device, to estimate the total solar energy transmittance, direct energy transmittance and the light transmittance of a solar protection device combined to a glazing.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 52022-1:2017 - Energy performance of buildings - Thermal, solar and daylight properties of building components and elements - Part 1 - defines a simplified calculation method to estimate the combined solar and daylight performance of solar protection devices (SPDs) combined with glazing. The standard produces the key outputs used in building energy assessments: total solar energy transmittance (g-value), total solar direct transmittance, and total light transmittance for systems such as louvre, venetian and roller blinds positioned interior, exterior or between panes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applicable when glazing total solar energy transmittance is between 0.15 and 0.85.
- SPD optical ranges: transmittance τ between 0 and 0.5 and reflectance ρ between 0.1 and 0.8; outside these ranges see ISO 52022-3.
- Assumes normal incidence of radiation; angular dependence and spectral distribution are not accounted for.
- Method is valid for inclined elements and multiple SPD positions (interior, exterior, between panes).
- Assumptions
- Venetian/louvre blinds are assumed adjusted to prevent direct solar penetration.
- For external and integrated SPDs the gap to glazing is treated as unventilated; for internal SPDs it is ventilated.
- Results are approximate: typical deviation from exact values lies between +0.10 and −0.02, generally conservative for cooling load estimations.
- Method structure
- Defines required input data for glazing and SPDs, calculation time intervals, the calculation procedure, and reporting formats and drawings.
- Produces output data for use in energy performance assessments and HVAC sizing.
Practical applications
- Use ISO 52022-1:2017 for:
- Rapid estimation of combined glazing + shading performance in building energy models.
- Early-stage design decisions on solar protection strategy to reduce cooling loads.
- Regulatory or compliance assessments where a simplified, standardized approach is required.
- Not intended for precise evaluation of beneficial solar gains or detailed thermal comfort criteria - for higher fidelity optical/spectral modeling use ISO 52022-3.
Who should use this standard
- Architects, façade engineers, energy modelers, HVAC designers, and regulators involved in building energy performance (EPB) assessments who need a standardized, fast method to quantify solar and daylight characteristics of glazing with shading devices.
