This document specifies the principal dimensions of engineer's and Lineman's pliers and the test values for the pliers in order to verify their aptitude to function in conformity with ISO 5744. General technical requirements are given in ISO 5743. The engineer's and Lineman's pliers illustrated in this document are examples only and are not intended to affect the manufacturer's design.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5746:2021 specifies the principal dimensions and test values for engineer’s (universal) and Lineman’s pliers to verify their functional aptitude in accordance with the test methods of ISO 5744. It complements the general technical requirements given in ISO 5743. The standard provides nominal lengths, minimum/maximum tolerances, and required test outcomes (cutting, torsion, flexion) and is the fourth edition (2021), updating nominal length ranges and dimensional series.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Dimensions and test values for universal (engineer’s) and Lineman’s pliers; illustrated examples do not constrain manufacturer design.
- Principal dimensions: Nominal lengths and dimensional ranges are specified (e.g., universal pliers nominal lengths from ~125 mm to 250 mm; Lineman’s pliers from ~165 mm to 250 mm), plus jaw widths, thickness, and related geometric limits.
- Test values and methods: Tests are to be performed in accordance with ISO 5744 and include:
- Cutting test - maximum permitted cutting force (F) for specified test wire diameters.
- Torsion test - maximum torsion moment (T) and permitted angular limits.
- Flexion (bending) test - flexion force and maximum permanent deformation (smax) limits; formulas from ISO 5744 apply when test distances differ.
- Designation and marking: Standardized designation examples (e.g., “Pinces universelles 303 - ISO 5746 - 160” or “Pinces Lineman's 304 - ISO 5746 - 190”) and marking requirements reference ISO 5743.
- Options: Pliers may be manufactured with or without cutting edges at the manufacturer’s discretion.
Applications and who uses it
- Tool manufacturers use ISO 5746 to design and certify pliers dimensions and performance for market conformity.
- Quality control and test laboratories apply the specified test values and ISO 5744 methods to verify cutting force, torsion and flexion behavior.
- Procurement and specification writers in industries (electrical, mechanical, maintenance) reference the standard to ensure purchased pliers meet accepted dimensional and performance benchmarks.
- Standards bodies and conformity assessors use it alongside ISO 5743 and ISO 5744 for regulatory and conformity-workflow alignment.
