The test described in ISO 5925-1:2007 determines the rate of leakage of ambient (cold) and medium (warm) temperature smoke from one side of door and shutter assemblies to the other, under the specified test conditions. The test is applicable to door and shutter assemblies of different configurations intended for purposes of controlling the passage of smoke in case of fire. The acceptable leakage rates for different situations are not addressed in ISO 5925-1:2007, but rather are specified by the regulations of the controlling authorities. The principle of the test is explained briefly.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 5925-1:2007 - Fire tests - Smoke-control door and shutter assemblies - Part 1: Ambient- and medium-temperature leakage tests defines a standardized method to measure smoke leakage through door and shutter assemblies at ambient and medium temperatures. The test determines the leakage rate (m3/h, corrected to standard conditions) under specified differential pressures and temperatures and is intended for assemblies used to control smoke movement in buildings. The standard does not set acceptable leakage limits; those are determined by regulators and authorities having jurisdiction.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Test applies to a range of door and shutter configurations intended for smoke control (single- or multi-leaf, rolling/folding curtains, vision panels, grilles).
- Test temperatures:
- Ambient: average air temperature (20 ± 10) °C
- Medium: average air temperature (200 ± 20) °C
- Differential pressure: Equipment must create and measure the pressure differential across the closed assembly; test requires at least 55 Pa.
- Leakage measurement:
- Leakage rate expressed in m3/h (corrected to standard temperature and pressure).
- Apparatus leakage q_a shall not exceed 7 m3/h.
- System must measure leakage up to at least 55 m3/h with around 1 m3/h accuracy.
- Instrumentation: Differential pressure accuracy (5 Pa or 10% of measured), barometric ±5%; for medium-temperature tests, 12 thermocouples arranged in four horizontal rows to monitor chamber temperature.
- Test specimen: Full-size assemblies (or largest that fit, typically up to 3 m × 3 m); specimens should be representative of in-service construction, seals and finishes. Doors often tested from both sides (two specimens) unless fully symmetrical.
- Pre-test requirements: Record physical characteristics and all gaps/seals; disengage latches during test; conditioning per ISO 834-1 where applicable.
- Procedure and reporting: Mounting, setting up, leakage test method, observations, expression of results and detailed test report requirements are specified.
Applications and users
ISO 5925-1 is used by:
- Test laboratories performing type and performance testing of smoke-control doors and shutters.
- Manufacturers for product development, quality control and performance claims.
- Fire safety engineers and consultants for smoke containment strategy and specification of components.
- Architects and building designers specifying compliant smoke-control assemblies.
- Regulatory authorities and certification bodies evaluating compliance with national codes (note: leakage acceptance criteria are set by local regulations).
Practical uses include verifying smoke containment performance, comparing sealing strategies, and supporting compliance documentation for building safety strategies.
