Abstract
Overview
ISO 6012:1997 - Earth-moving machinery - Service instrumentation provides a practical, work-site focused guide to the diagnostic and service instruments recommended for checking earth‑moving machines. Prepared by ISO/TC 127 (Earth‑moving machinery), this fourth edition lists portable instruments and describes the intended scope: enabling machine design that provides proper accessibility and necessary connections so routine diagnostic checks can be performed easily at the work-site.
Key topics and requirements
- Purpose and scope
- A guidance list of diagnostic instruments for on-site inspection and maintenance of earth‑moving machinery (crawler/wheel tractors, loaders, hydraulic excavators), adaptable to graders, scrapers and dumpers.
- Emphasis on design for accessibility and connections to support portable instruments.
- Instrument selection and classification
- Table-based guidance mapping types of checks to recommended instruments (e.g., pressure gauges, vacuum meters, pyrometers, flow meters, thermometers, tacho/gauges).
- Each mapping uses classification letters: A = definitely required (for machines using the listed element) and B = desirable.
- Instrument choices reflect common, portable diagnostic devices; more sophisticated alternatives are acceptable.
- Operational constraints
- Excludes instruments whose use requires major machine disassembly or is primarily for workshop use.
- Diagnostic checks are intended to be carried out by qualified personnel, with relevant specifications and procedures included in the service manual rather than the operator’s manual.
- Coverage of systems
- Instrumentation recommendations address engine, power train, hydrostatic systems, brakes, steering, undercarriage, equipment hydraulics, wheels/tyres, electrical plant, and general mechanical checks (torque, clearances, lever effort).
Practical applications and users
- Target users:
- Service engineers, field technicians, fleet maintenance managers, OEM design engineers and technical writers preparing service manuals.
- Typical uses:
- Establishing on-site diagnostic toolkits for preventive maintenance.
- Designing machine access points and connection ports to facilitate portable testing.
- Specifying minimum instrumentation and checks to include in service documentation and training.
- Supporting rapid fault isolation for engine, hydraulic, braking and steering systems at the work-site.
Related standards and references
- Prepared by ISO/TC 127 (Earth‑moving machinery); intended to complement machine‑specific service manuals and other ISO machinery standards covering safety and performance. For implementation, consult OEM service procedures and local regulatory requirements.
