This document specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of fixed carbon dioxide firefighting systems in buildings, plants or other structures. It is not applicable to extinguishing systems on ships, in aircraft, on vehicles or on mobile fire appliances, or to below‑ground systems in the mining industry; nor does it apply to carbon dioxide pre-inerting systems. Design of systems where unclosable opening(s) exceed a specified area and where the opening(s) can be subject to the effect of wind is not specified, although general guidance on the procedure to be followed in such cases is given (see 7.4.3.2).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 6183:2022 - "Fire protection equipment - Carbon dioxide extinguishing systems for use on premises - Design and installation" - defines requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of fixed carbon dioxide (CO2) firefighting systems in buildings, plants and other structures. The standard covers total‑flooding and local application CO2 systems used on premises, including supply, distribution, detection, control, commissioning and ongoing inspection.
Note: ISO 6183:2022 is not applicable to systems on ships, aircraft, vehicles or mobile fire appliances, to below‑ground mining systems, or to carbon dioxide pre‑inerting systems. Design for enclosures with unclosable openings affected by wind is not fully specified, but general guidance is provided (see clause 7.4.3.2).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard addresses practical technical elements essential for safe, effective CO2 fire suppression:
- Use and limitations - intended applications, temperature and occupancy limits, and when CO2 is appropriate versus other agents.
- Safety - hazards to personnel, warning signage for occupiable/unoccupiable areas, electrical hazards, earthing and electrostatic discharge controls.
- System design - specifications and working documents; CO2 supply (quality, quantity, container arrangement, storage); distribution (piping, fittings, supports, valves, nozzles).
- Enclosure requirements - structural strength, loss through openings, ventilation impacts for total‑flooding systems.
- Detection, actuation and controls - automatic detection, shutdown of plant/equipment, local control stations, audible/visual alarms.
- Hydraulic and concentration calculations - flow, friction and pressure loss, design quantity, K‑factors, flame extinguishment vs inerting requirements, discharge duration, and system performance.
- Commissioning and acceptance testing - enclosure checks, mechanical/electrical reviews, functional tests and completion documentation.
- Inspection, maintenance and training - periodic inspection schedules, maintenance procedures, testing and user training.
Applications and users
ISO 6183:2022 is intended for professionals responsible for fire protection in premises where CO2 suppression is required, including:
- Fire protection engineers and system designers
- Building services consultants and contractors
- Facilities managers and safety officers
- Installers, commissioning agents and maintenance/service providers
- Authorities having jurisdiction and insurers reviewing system compliance
Common practical uses include protecting plant rooms, industrial processes, electrical switchgear and other areas where rapid extinguishment is needed and water or other agents are unsuitable.
Related standards
ISO 6183:2022 is used alongside national building and fire codes and other fire‑protection standards (detection, alarm, electrical safety and gas storage). Consult applicable local regulations and complementary standards when designing and installing CO2 fire suppression systems.
