Is applicable to self-propelled water craft employed in the pilot servicing of merchant ships in closed waters, estuaries and open-sea road-steads. The water craft employed mainly in pilotage of merchant ships by leading may be relieved of adhering to these requirements completely or partially.

ISO 6216:1980 - Shipbuilding, Inland Navigation: Pilot Craft - Classification and Basic Requirements is an international standard that defines classification, design considerations and basic safety and equipment requirements for self‑propelled pilot craft used to transfer pilots to and from merchant ships in closed waters, estuaries and open‑sea roadsteads. First published in 1980, the standard aims to harmonize terminology, improve pilot transfer safety and support international maritime operations. It also notes that certain pilot craft (especially those used mainly for leading) may be exempted wholly or partially by competent authorities.
