Abstract

Overview

ISO 6224:2024 specifies requirements for textile‑reinforced thermoplastics hoses intended for general‑purpose water discharge (non‑potable). This fifth edition updates dimensions, physical properties, testing and marking rules for flexible thermoplastic‑lined hoses with textile reinforcement and a thermoplastic cover. The standard defines construction, performance limits and quality‑control testing to ensure safe and consistent hose manufacture.

- For general‑purpose water‑discharge hoses only; not intended for potable (drinking) water, washing‑machine inlets, firefighting, certain agricultural machines or consumer garden hoses.
Construction
- Three‑part construction: flexible thermoplastic lining, textile reinforcement (natural or synthetic), and flexible thermoplastic cover (smooth or fluted).
- Lining and cover must be uniform, concentric and free from visible defects.
Classification / Pressure ratings
- Type 1 (low): 0.6 MPa (6 bar) at 23 °C; 0.36 MPa (3.6 bar) at 60 °C.
- Type 2 (medium): 1.0 MPa (10 bar) at 23 °C; 0.65 MPa (6.5 bar) at 60 °C.
- Type 3 (high): 2.5 MPa (25 bar) at 23 °C; 1.6 MPa (16 bar) at 60 °C.
Dimensions and tolerances
- Inside diameters, tolerances and minimum wall thicknesses specified (see table values in the standard, e.g., 4–50 mm sizes).
- Concentricity limit: max 1.0 mm total indicator reading.
- Cut‑length tolerances per ISO 1307.
Material and physical properties
- Minimum tensile strength: 10.0 MPa for lining and cover.
- Minimum elongation at break: 250%.
- Ageing limits (ISO 188): change in tensile strength ±15%, elongation ±25%.
- Loss on heating (max): 4% (ISO 176).
Finished hose tests
- Proof and burst pressure requirements by type (specified in MPa/bar).
- Adhesion between components ≥ 1.5 kN/m (ISO 8033).
- UV resistance, flexibility (ISO 10619), low‑temperature performance and dimensional change limits.
Testing and certification
- Type, routine and production tests defined; type tests repeated at most every five years or on manufacturing changes.
- Test reports or certificates supplied on request.
Marking
- Continuous durable marking required: manufacturer, ISO 6224 reference, hose type, inside diameter, maximum working pressure, and manufacturing date (example: XXX/ISO 6224/type 1/25/0,6 MPa/2Q23).
