The requirements deal with the geometric charateristics to ensure interchangeability. The dimensions of the joint-ground zone and the outer diameter of the tube connected to the joint are given in a table and illustrated in a drawing. In addition the surface finish is specified. A system of gauges (stell balls) for testing the ball cup is tabled. In the annex a method of testing the leakage including the apparatus is described.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 641:1975 - Laboratory glassware - Interchangeable spherical ground joints specifies the geometric and surface requirements for spherical ground glass joints used in laboratory glassware to ensure interchangeability regardless of manufacturer. The standard defines dimensional tables and tolerances for joint zones and adjacent tube diameters, a conventional designation system (letter S + nominal spherical diameter in mm), surface finish limits, gauging methods, and an annexed leakage test procedure including apparatus.
Key topics and requirements
- Dimensional specifications and tolerances
- Nominal spherical sizes (S7 to S102) with maximum/minimum diameters for male (sphere) and female (cup) elements.
- Limits for the large and narrow ends of the ground zone and the maximum outer diameter of the adjacent tube (to aid clamp compatibility).
- Designation
- Conventional size marking: “S” followed by approximate spherical diameter in millimetres (e.g., S19).
- Surface finish
- Ground surface roughness specified; numeric Ra value must not exceed 1 µm and preferably be less than 0.5 µm (see ISO/R 468 reference).
- Gauging and inspection
- Use of gauge balls (steel calibrating balls) with specified diameters to check female elements (table provided).
- Mechanical metrology methods (including pneumatic gauges) recommended to verify dimensional tolerances.
- Leakage testing (Annex A)
- Dry-assembly vacuum test: apparatus description for a ~1.5 L system, mercury manometer range and measurement procedure.
- Cleaning procedure before test (solvent wipe-example: cyclohexane-drying, brush to remove particles).
- Acceptance leak rates: for sizes S13 and smaller, pressure rise ≤ 930 Pa/min; for sizes S19 and larger, ≤ 2 kPa/min.
- Illustrations and tables
- Figure showing joint dimensions and tables mapping sizes, tolerances and gauge ball diameters.
Practical applications
- Ensures interchangeability of spherical ground joints across laboratory glassware (distillation, reflux, reaction assemblies, condensers).
- Helps manufacturers produce compatible glass joints that fit standard clamps and mating parts.
- Guides quality control and inspection in glassware production and calibration laboratories.
- Useful for laboratory managers and purchasing agents specifying standard-compliant replacement parts.
Who uses this standard
- Glassware manufacturers and fabricators
- Quality assurance and metrology teams
- Laboratory equipment designers and suppliers
- Lab managers, procurement specialists, and standards committees
