The test method consists in drawing a given block with definite speed over the test surface of in general rough structure. The bottom side of the block is covered with a layer of standard rubber to get comparable results.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7176-13:1989 specifies a standardized test method to determine the coefficient of friction of surfaces used for wheelchair testing. The method defines a repeatable procedure that uses a steel test block with a standardized rubber interface to produce comparable friction values for rough surfaces (typical of unfinished concrete) and other test surfaces used in wheelchair standards.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A specified steel block fitted with a standard rubber plate is drawn over the test surface at a controlled speed and over a defined distance; horizontal and opposite-direction pulls are used to average results.
- Test specimen: Rubber plate approximately 50 mm × 200 mm × 6 mm bonded to the block. Rubber properties are specified (hardness 55 ± 5 DIDC) and resilience controlled per referenced ISO methods.
- Block mass: Combined mass of block, ring and rubber 5 kg (± 0.05 kg); block dimensions and tolerances are specified.
- Surface preparation: Rubber face is lightly abraded using waterproof silicon carbide paper (class P120), brushed or wiped dry; no solvents or cleaners are permitted.
- Execution: Pull distance 200 mm completed in approximately 10 s; tests are carried out in three representative zones of the surface and repeated in the opposite direction.
- Force measurement: Traction measured with a force gauge calibrated to ±2% over the 25–100 N range.
- Calculation: Coefficient of friction µ is calculated as µ = (F1 + F2) / (2·m·g), where F1 and F2 are average pull forces, m is block mass and g = 9.81 m/s².
- Applicability and limits: Intended for surfaces with slope less than 10° (influence of slope is negligible under this limit).
- Acceptance criterion: A test surface is considered acceptable for wheelchair tests if the measured coefficient of friction lies between 0.75 and 1.0.
Applications and users
- Wheelchair manufacturers: Verify that laboratory test surfaces used in durability, stability and ramp-climb tests conform to a standardized friction level.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: Produce repeatable surface-friction data to support compliance with other parts of ISO 7176 series.
- Accessibility and facilities engineers: Characterize ramp and floor surfaces when assessing wheelchair maneuverability and safety.
- Researchers: Compare friction across materials and surface treatments in controlled, repeatable conditions.
