This document specifies test methods for determining the maximum speed of electrically powered wheelchairs, including scooters, intended to carry one person with a maximum nominal speed not exceeding 15 km/h (4,167 m/s) on a level surface.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7176-6:2018 specifies uniform test methods to determine the maximum speed of electrically powered wheelchairs, including scooters, intended to carry one person with a nominal maximum speed not exceeding 15 km/h (4.167 m/s) on a level surface. The standard provides a repeatable procedure to generate comparable speed values for reporting, product datasheets and regulatory or procurement decisions.
Key Topics
- Scope: Tests apply to electrically powered wheelchairs and scooters with nominal maximum speeds up to 15 km/h on a horizontal plane.
- Instrumentation: Speed-measurement devices must record up to 5 m/s with an accuracy of ±0.1 m/s and a sampling rate of at least 60 Hz.
- Test surface: A flat, rigid, horizontal plan with sufficient dimensions and a coefficient of friction compliant with ISO 7176-13.
- Test occupant: Use a mannequin as defined in ISO 7176-11 or a human test occupant adjusted per ISO 7176-22; added instrumentation mass must not exceed 5% of mannequin mass and overall mass adjustments must be made to preserve mass distribution.
- Preconditioning and run method: The powertrain should reach representative operating temperature by running approximately 1.5 km prior to measurement. Tests are performed within 5 minutes of preconditioning on the test plane.
- Measurement sequence: For forward and reverse travel, set controls for maximum user-accessible speed, run three straight-line passes, record peak speeds, and compute the arithmetic mean of the three runs to obtain the reported maximum speed (Vm).
- Safety: The procedure includes a safety warning - tests can be hazardous to human occupants and test personnel; fixed ballast and appropriate precautions are recommended.
Applications
- Producing comparable performance data for product selection, procurement and user guidance.
- Supporting type testing and conformity reporting in laboratory and certification contexts.
- Informing manufacturers for datasheet disclosure: maximum forward speed on a level surface must be provided on the manufacturer data sheet in km/h as specified by ISO 7176-15.
- Assisting regulators and accessibility planners in determining where a vehicle may be permitted to operate based on local rules tied to maximum speed.

This standard focuses on a practical, reproducible method to quantify maximum speed on a level plane and to ensure results are presented consistently for users, manufacturers and regulators.
