This document specifies the essential properties and performance of liquid foam concentrates used to make foams for the extinguishment and inhibition of reignition of fires of Class A fuels. Minimum performance on certain test fires is specified. NOTE 1 Class A fires are fires involving solid materials, usually of an organic nature, in which combustion normally takes place with the formation of glowing embers (see 3.16). NOTE 2 Class A fuels can include materials such as vegetation, wood, cloth, paper, rubber and some plastics (see 3.17).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7203-4:2022 provides internationally recognized requirements for Class A foam concentrates used in fire extinguishing media. Developed by ISO, this standard details the specified properties, performance criteria, and essential testing methods for liquid foam concentrates designed for suppressing and preventing the reignition of Class A fires. These fires involve solid, organic-based materials such as wood, paper, textiles, rubber, certain plastics, and vegetation, which typically burn with glowing embers.
This standard ensures uniformity and safety by defining test procedures, physical and chemical property limits, marking, packaging, and mandatory documentation for foam concentrates intended for Class A fire suppression.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Definitions
The standard outlines the types of foam concentrates suitable for extinguishing Class A fires and defines key terms such as “expansion,” “drainage,” “sediment,” and “Class A fuel.” -
Performance Requirements
ISO 7203-4:2022 prescribes minimum performance criteria, including:- Foam expansion and drainage characteristics
- Tolerance to freezing and thawing cycles
- Acceptable sediment content before and after aging
- pH range and stability under temperature variation
- Surface tension before and after temperature conditioning
- Fire extinguishing performance on designated test fires
-
Compatibility and Use
The standard covers use with potable and sea water, requiring products used with seawater to maintain identical recommended concentrations and account for increased equipment corrosion. -
Health, Safety, and Environmental Information
Manufacturers must supply toxicology and ecotoxicology data for their products at recommended use concentrations to support environmental and occupational safety. -
Marking and Packaging
ISO 7203-4:2022 sets clear requirements for permanent, legible container markings, correct product labeling (including concentration, temperature tolerance, and sea water suitability), and guidance on packaging to preserve foam integrity.
Applications
ISO 7203-4:2022 is vital for industries and organizations involved in fire protection and emergency response. Typical applications include:
-
Wildland and Forest Fire Services:
Reliable foam concentrates enhance suppression effectiveness on burning vegetation and timber. -
Structural Firefighting:
Used by municipal fire departments for buildings containing wood, paper, textiles, and related combustibles. -
Industrial and Storage Facilities:
Protection of paper mills, lumber storages, textile warehouses, and other facilities dealing with organic solids. -
Aircraft and Marine Applications:
Used where specialized, corrosion-resistant firefighting systems are required, with attention to compatibility with sea water as applicable. -
End-User Guidance:
The standard helps purchasers and safety professionals select compliant Class A foam concentrates, specify storage and handling conditions, and understand labeling and documentation essentials.
Meeting ISO 7203-4:2022 requirements supports regulatory compliance, ensures effective Class A fire suppression, aids in risk management, and provides for international acceptance of firefighting products.
