Silicon content can be determined in the range of 0,2 % (m/m) to 1 % (m/m). The principle is dissolution of a test portion in acid, aspiration of the test solution into a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame of an atomic absorption spectrometer, measurement of the absorbance of the resonance line energy from the spectrum of silicon and comparison with that of calibration solutions at 251,6 nm.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7530-8:1992 provides a standardized method for determining silicon content in nickel alloys using flame atomic absorption spectrometric (FAAS) analysis. This international standard is part of the ISO 7530 series, developed by ISO Technical Committee 155, which focuses on nickel and nickel alloys. Specifically, this standard addresses the measurement of silicon within the range of 0.2% (m/m) to 1% (m/m), critical for ensuring the quality and performance of nickel alloy materials in various applications.
Key Topics
- Scope of Analysis: The standard is applicable for measuring silicon content from 0.2% to 1% (m/m) in nickel alloys, using established atomic absorption spectrometry procedures.
- Analytical Principle: Involves dissolving a precisely weighed test sample in acid, then aspirating the solution into a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame of an atomic absorption spectrometer. The absorbance is measured at a wavelength of 251.6 nm, specific to silicon.
- Calibration and Accuracy: Calibration is performed using standard solutions, ensuring traceability and repeatable accuracy. ISO 7530-8 references ISO 5725 for determining method repeatability and reproducibility.
- Sample Preparation: Highlights the importance of precise sample dissolution, careful reagent handling (notably hydrofluoric acid), and use of non-reactive labware such as plastics or polytetrafluoroethylene.
- Reporting and Quality Control: Execution of reagent blanks, duplicate determinations, and adherence to ISO 7530-1 for general requirements and reporting are emphasized for consistent laboratory practice.
Applications
Implementation of ISO 7530-8:1992 is crucial in industries that rely on nickel alloys for high-performance engineering, including:
- Metallurgy and Materials Engineering: Accurate determination of silicon ensures desired mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in nickel alloys.
- Aerospace and Power Generation: Critical for components exposed to extreme temperatures and aggressive environments, where silicon content affects alloy stability and durability.
- Manufacturing Quality Control: Essential for suppliers and fabricators of nickel alloys to verify material specifications, maintain product consistency, and meet client or regulatory requirements.
- Research and Development: Supports the development of new nickel-based materials by enabling precise analytical verification of silicon and other alloying elements.
Through standardized procedures, ISO 7530-8:1992 allows laboratories to produce reliable and comparable silicon content results, aiding in global trade and compliance with material specifications.
