Abstract
Overview
ISO 8301:1991 - "Thermal insulation - Determination of steady‑state thermal resistance and related properties - Heat flow meter apparatus" defines the use of the heat flow meter (HFM) method to measure steady‑state heat transfer through flat slab specimens and to calculate related heat‑transfer properties. This International Standard is a secondary (relative) method: it measures the thermal resistance (or conductance) of a specimen relative to a standard specimen. Annex A is an integral part of the standard (limits for apparatus performance and testing conditions); Annexes B–E are informative.
Keywords: ISO 8301:1991, heat flow meter, thermal insulation, steady‑state thermal resistance, thermal conductance, heat transfer measurement.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and method: Defines application of the heat flow meter apparatus to flat slab specimens and the calculation of thermal resistance, conductance or mean thermal conductivity when specimen requirements are met.
- Document structure: Three main sections - (1) General considerations, (2) Apparatus and calibration, (3) Test procedures - plus annexes for limit values, meter guidance, specimen thickness estimation, thermocouples and bibliography.
- Specimen limits: Reports normally refer to specimens with thermal resistance > 0.1 m²·K/W, subject to thickness limits referenced in the standard (see 1.7.2 and 1.8.x).
- Apparatus design and calibration: Requirements for HFM construction, performance checks and calibration procedures to ensure accurate steady‑state heat‑flow measurements.
- Measurement interpretation: Recognizes that porous, low‑density and moist materials can have complex heat transfer (conduction, radiation, possible convection and moisture effects). The standard emphasizes the concept of a transfer factor (apparent or effective thermal conductivity) and that thermal resistance plus boundary‑surface information better describe behaviour.
- Operational cautions: Recommends dried specimens for standard testing; warns about influence of radiation, thickness, orientation and temperature difference on results.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Test laboratories, thermal insulation manufacturers, QA/QC engineers, materials researchers, apparatus designers and standards bodies.
- Practical uses:
- Producing certified thermal resistance/conductance data for insulation products.
- Inter‑laboratory comparison and validation of HFM apparatus.
- Supporting product selection, building energy modelling and compliance testing where steady‑state thermal properties are required.
- Why it matters: Delivers repeatable, standardized steady‑state measurements and guidance for interpreting results for materials where combined conduction and radiation dominate.
