ISO 839-1:2006 specifies the dimensions of milling machine arbors with 7/24 tapers in accordance with ISO 297. It also specifies the designation of these arbors.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 839-1:2006 defines the dimensional requirements and designation rules for milling machine arbors with 7/24 tapers in accordance with ISO 297. This part establishes the key geometry, tolerancing conventions and designation syntax needed to ensure interchangeability and consistent manufacturing of arbors used with milling cutters.
The standard covers principal dimensions, pilot and protective boss features at the arbor end, material minimums, and the formal way to designate an arbor. Accessories (spacing collars, bearing collars and clamping nuts) are covered separately in ISO 839-2.
Key Topics
- Taper type and reference: 7/24 taper in accordance with ISO 297.
- Dimensional scope: Diameters adopted correspond to ISO 240 from 16 mm to 100 mm (omitting 19 mm and 70 mm).
- Units and tolerances: All dimensions are in millimetres; unspecified tolerances default to tolerance class m per ISO 2768-1:1989.
- Principal dimensions: Illustrated in the standard (figure and table) showing flange diameters, useful lengths, and thread sizes for clamping.
- Pilot and protective boss: Separate figures and tables specify the pilot dimensions at the arbor end and the minimum protective boss dimensions when provided.
- Material and mechanical properties: Material is at the manufacturer's option; minimum tensile strength is 800 N/mm² and hardness 56 +4 HRC.
- Designation format: A standardized designation must include the word "Arbor", reference to ISO 839-1, the 7/24 taper number and the flange diameter d, with an optional suffix indicating a protected or piloted end. Example: Arbor ISO 839-1 - 40/8 protected.
Applications
ISO 839-1:2006 is used by designers, manufacturers and quality engineers involved in:
- Manufacturing and inspection of milling machine arbors and mandrels.
- Specifying tooling interfaces for milling cutters and arbors to ensure interchangeability.
- Ordering and cataloguing standard-arbors for machine shops and tooling suppliers.
- Verifying mechanical properties and end features (pilot or protective boss) for safe operation and accurate centring.
Adoption of the standard reduces misfit, improves tooling change repeatability and supports global interchangeability of arbor-mounted cutters.

- ISO 2768-1:1989 - General tolerances for linear and angular dimensions (tolerance class m).
- ISO 839-2 - Accessories for milling machine arbors with 7/24 tapers (spacing collars, bearing collars, clamping nuts).
- ISO 240 - Interchangeability dimensions for cutter arbors or mandrels (diameter correspondence).
For procurement, design integration and quality assurance, reference ISO 839-1:2006 to ensure consistent arbor dimensions, clear designation and reliable tooling fit.
