ISO 8442-2:1997

Overview

ISO 8442-2:1997 specifies material, construction, performance and test requirements for stainless steel and silver‑plated cutlery intended to come into contact with food. It is Part 2 of the ISO 8442 series covering cutlery and table hollowware and complements other parts that address silver‑ or gold‑plated and precious‑metal items. The standard focuses on safety, durability and hygiene - not on aesthetic design or size.

  • Blade hardness: martensitic blades ≥48 HRC (carving knives ≥52 HRC).

  • Each item must be indelibly marked with manufacturer identification and reference to the standard.
