Abstract
Overview
ISO 8442-7:2000 specifies the material and performance requirements for table cutlery made of silver, other precious metals, and their alloys that come into direct contact with foodstuffs. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard provides internationally recognized guidelines to ensure the quality, durability, and safety of precious metal table cutlery items such as knives, forks, spoons, carving sets, and ladles.
This standard focuses on the fundamental requirements for materials, performance, construction, and marking for table cutlery manufactured from silver and other precious metals, excluding aspects related to design, size, or finishing style.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Outlines the use of silver, other precious metals, and alloys, mandating a minimum fineness of 800 parts per thousand. Stainless steel may be used for specific components like knife blades.
- Performance Standards: Details mechanical and physical properties including corrosion resistance, hardness, and strength tests for cutlery and knife blades. Ensures products remain durable and safe for prolonged food contact.
- Construction Quality: Sets criteria for alignment, uniformity, and absence of defects. Includes requirements for smooth edges, tight seams on hollow handles, and balance in table knives.
- Precious Metal Plating: Provides minimum standards for the composition, fineness, and adhesion of precious metal coatings (such as gold and silver).
- Testing Methods: Describes standardized test procedures for adhesion of coatings, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength.
- Marking and Labelling: Specifies the need for clear, permanent identification of manufacturer or supplier, and information confirming compliance with the standard at point of sale.
Applications
ISO 8442-7:2000 is applicable to manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers of precious metal cutlery who wish to:
- Demonstrate compliance with international quality standards, increasing consumer trust and marketability.
- Ensure health and safety in materials and production for utensils that are in direct contact with foodstuffs.
- Meet regulatory requirements in markets where adherence to ISO standards is mandatory or recommended.
- Support due diligence for import/export by providing recognized proof of standard compliance.
- Facilitate fair trade and procurement by offering objective criteria to evaluate cutlery products made of silver and other precious metals.
Related Standards
ISO 8442-7:2000 is part of a wider series concerning materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - particularly cutlery and holloware. Related standards include:

- ISO 8442-2: Requirements for stainless steel and silver-plated cutlery
- ISO 8442-3: Requirements for silver-plated table and decorative holloware
- ISO 8442-4: Requirements for gold-plated cutlery
- ISO 8442-5: Specification for sharpness and edge retention test of cutlery
- ISO 8442-6: Lightly silver-plated table holloware protected by lacquer
- ISO 8442-8: Requirements for silver table and decorative holloware
Additional references made within ISO 8442-7:2000 include other international and European standards related to stainless steel, precious metal solders, and test methods for metallic materials.
Using the guidance of ISO 8442-7:2000 ensures that table cutlery made from silver and precious metals meets stringent requirements for use in contact with food, promoting safety, durability, and consumer confidence in high-value tableware.
