ISO 8459:2009 includes data elements that are exchanged or are potentially exchanged among bibliographic systems. Those data elements that are not exchanged or not likely to be exchanged are ignored as they do not need standardization. Data elements being handled by transport protocols are not included, only those related to application level protocols. NOTE The French version of this International Standard does not contain synonyms for the data elements which explains the difference in length between the two versions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8459:2009 - Information and documentation - Bibliographic data element directory for use in data exchange and enquiry - is an international standard that defines a consolidated directory of bibliographic data elements used when exchanging information between bibliographic systems. Published in 2009 (first edition), it consolidates the earlier multi-part ISO 8459 series into a single resource and is maintained by ISO/TC 46, Subcommittee SC 4 (Technical Interoperability).
The standard focuses on application-level data elements (not transport protocols) and provides clear names, definitions, examples and synonyms to support interoperable messaging between systems involved in acquisition, cataloguing, searching, requesting loans or copies, and holdings management.
Key topics and technical scope
- Data element directory (Clause 3): organized by class and sub-class with entry, definition, examples and synonyms where applicable.
- Alphabetical listing (Clause 4): an A–Z index of data elements with examples and equivalences to aid mapping and translation.
- Classes covered: address, database record, finance, holdings, party (person/group), request, resource, search, transaction, and more - grouped to reflect common bibliographic processes.
- Terminology and definitions: comprehensive glossary for terms such as record, resource, authority record, holdings, metadata, identifier, request and reservation.
- Design constraints: includes only elements that are exchanged or likely to be exchanged; excludes transport-layer elements and does not mandate element structure, validation rules or required/optional statuses.
- Multilingual notes: English edition includes synonyms; French edition omits synonym columns for specified reasons.
Practical applications
ISO 8459:2009 is a practical tool for:
- System developers and integrators who design application-level messaging and need a common set of bibliographic data element names and definitions for interoperability.
- Library and information systems architects creating or mapping schemas for cataloguing, acquisitions, holdings and circulation workflows.
- Metadata specialists performing schema mapping, crosswalks or data migration between different bibliographic systems.
- Standards authors and implementers who want to align new profiles, protocols or content schemas with an established set of bibliographic elements.
- Vendors and institutions seeking to harmonize data exchange between ILS/CMS, discovery services and interlibrary loan systems.
Related standards
- Consolidates elements from the earlier ISO 8459 parts (ISO 8459‑1 through ISO 8459‑5) into one document.
- Intended to serve as a harmonizing resource across bibliographic and library standards, supporting schema and protocol interoperability.
Keywords: ISO 8459, bibliographic data element directory, data exchange, library interoperability, metadata, bibliographic systems, cataloguing, holdings, application-level protocols.
