This document applies to rigid endoscopes designed for use in the practice of medicine. Endoscopes having a fibre-optic or opto-electronic imaging system are excluded. It specifies a test method for determining the optical resolution of endoscopes. This document provides a measurement method for characterizing three aspects of the optical resolution of a rigid endoscope. Characteristic A is used to provide a simple measurement of the limiting resolution of the endoscope image. Characteristic B provides a measurement of low spatial frequency resolution and characterizes the sharpness, or contrast, of the endoscope image. Characteristic C provides a measurement of the spatial frequency response of the endoscope image.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8600-5:2020 - "Optics and photonics - Medical endoscopes and endotherapy devices - Part 5" - specifies a standardized test method for determining the optical resolution of rigid endoscopes with optics. The standard applies to rigid endoscopes intended for medical use and explicitly excludes endoscopes that use fibre‑optic or opto‑electronic imaging systems. It defines three complementary resolution characteristics (A, B, C) and prescribes apparatus, measurement procedures, and reporting requirements for objective, reproducible resolution assessment.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies only to rigid endoscopes with optics; fibre‑optic and opto‑electronic imaging systems are excluded.
- Three resolution characteristics:
- Characteristic A - Limiting resolution: a single‑valued, subjective metric useful for rapid manufacturing tests and simple end‑user communication (informative Annex A).
- Characteristic B - Contrast Transfer Function (CTF): measures low spatial frequency contrast and image sharpness using square‑wave bar targets (informative Annex B; normative Annex D defines CTF/MTF).
- Characteristic C - Modulation Transfer Function (MTF): measures spatial frequency response (objective, engineering‑grade metric; informative Annex C).
- Apparatus and setup:
- Optical bench/rail with secure mounting for endoscope and target.
- Coupling optics to image a portion of the endoscope field onto a test camera (Annex F discusses relay optics). Coupling optics must not limit the endoscope’s measured resolution.
- Camera and recorder: linear operating range required-disable sharpening and image enhancement; set gamma to 1.0 or apply OECF correction (ISO 14524 referenced).
- Light source: white light unless a specific wavelength is required by design.
- Measurement parameters: working distance, on‑axis and off‑axis points (70% of maximum image height), spatial frequency units (lp/mm, lp/degree, lp/pixel). Annex E covers spatial frequency conversion; Annex G gives measurement‑frequency examples.
- Test report: describe methods, apparatus, and any alternative procedures used.
Applications and Users
- Manufacturers: production QA, end‑of‑line testing, and product specifications.
- Design and R&D engineers: optical design verification using MTF data.
- Regulatory and compliance teams: objective evidence for device performance claims.
- Test labs and clinical engineers: acceptance testing, procurement validation, and maintenance checks.
- Clinicians and hospital procurement: interpret resolution metrics for device selection.
