This document specifies fuse-links with tabs (blade-type) Type M (medium-high current) for use in road vehicles. It establishes, for this fuse-link type, the rated current, test procedures, performance requirements and dimensions. This document is applicable for fuse-links with a rated voltage of 32 V and a current rating of ≤80 A and a breaking capacity of 1 000 A intended for use in road vehicles. This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 8820‑1 and ISO 8820‑2. The numbering of the clauses corresponds to that of ISO 8820‑1 whose requirements are applicable, except where modified by requirements particular to this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8820-11:2020 specifies fuse-links with tabs (blade type) - Type M (medium‑high current) for road vehicles. The standard defines rated currents, dimensional requirements, required markings and colour coding, test procedures and performance criteria for automotive blade fuses with a rated voltage of 32 V, current ratings up to ≤ 80 A, and a breaking capacity of 1 000 A. It is intended to be used together with ISO 8820‑1 and ISO 8820‑2 for complete guidance on automotive fuse design and testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and ratings: Applies to blade-type Type M fuse-links for road vehicles - rated voltage 32 V, rated current ≤ 80 A, breaking capacity 1 000 A.
- Marking & colour coding: Colour codes associate rated currents to colours (examples: 20 A - yellow; 25 A - white; 30 A - green; 40 A - orange; 50 A - red; 60 A - blue; 70 A - brown; 80 A - black/dark grey).
- Performance tests: Includes voltage drop, transient current cycling, environmental/climatic and chemical loads, mechanical load, current steps, breaking capacity, operating time rating and temperature rise.
- Test fixtures and electrical requirements: Test fixture connection resistance requirement ≤ 0.35 mΩ for Type M to ensure valid electrical test conditions. Fuse-links must provide visible evidence of an open fuse element after operation.
- Terminal strength: Defined terminal forces and deformation limits (per standard test methods) to verify mechanical robustness of tabs.
- Dimensions: Detailed dimensional drawings and tolerances (Figure 5 and Table references) to ensure interchangeability and correct fit in receptacles.
- Reference materials: Normative references include ISO 8820‑1, ISO 6722‑1 (cable specifications) and ISO 2768‑1 (tolerances).
Applications and practical value
- Ensures safety and reliability of medium‑high current blade fuses in automotive electrical systems (power distribution, protection of high-current circuits).
- Enables consistent product design, supplier specification and quality control for fuse manufacturers and OEMs.
- Provides test procedures for certification and type-approval, helping test labs and compliance engineers demonstrate fuse performance under transient, overload and environmental conditions.
- Helps vehicle electrical system designers choose fuse-links that meet breaking capacity, operating time, voltage drop and temperature requirements for specific circuits.
Who should use this standard
- Automotive fuse manufacturers and component designers
- Vehicle OEMs, electrical system designers and harness suppliers
- Test laboratories and certification bodies
- Quality engineers and regulatory authorities involved in automotive electrical safety
