Specifies the following methods of analysis for the substances to be tested: measurement of pH, determination of water content, determination of free alkalinity or free acidity, determination of total alkalinity, determination of matter extractable by light petroleum, determinition of the sodium alkylsulphates content, determination of sodium sulphate content, determination of sodium chloride content. In an annex a general scheme of anlysis is given.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 895:1977 is an International Standard developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 91 that specifies methods of analysis for technical sodium secondary alkylsulphates. These substances are a type of surface active agents derived from secondary alcohols and are utilized primarily in liquid form. The standard outlines precise analytical techniques to determine critical properties such as pH, water content, alkalinity, acidity, and the content of sodium alkylsulphates, sodium sulphate, and sodium chloride. Additionally, it provides procedures for measuring matter extractable by light petroleum and includes a general scheme of analysis in an annex.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, laboratories, and quality control professionals working with sodium secondary alkylsulphates, ensuring consistency and quality in product testing.
Key Topics
- Measurement of pH: Utilizes potentiometric methods to determine the acidity or alkalinity of aqueous solutions of sodium alkylsulphates.
- Water Content Determination: Follows azeotropic distillation techniques to quantify water present in the sample which is critical for assessing product purity.
- Free and Total Alkalinity/Acidity: Employs titrimetric methods for the accurate measurement of free acidity or alkalinity and total alkalinity, ensuring the chemical stability of surfactants.
- Matter Extractable by Light Petroleum: Defines a procedure to isolate sulphur-free products and sulfur-containing non-ionizing substances by extraction with light petroleum, indicating impurities or by-products.
- Sodium Alkylsulphates Content: Details evaporation and ethanol extraction steps to quantify the active surfactant content, while accounting for interfering substances.
- Sodium Sulphate and Sodium Chloride Content: Specifies separate titrimetric and potentiometric methods to determine these inorganic contents which impact product performance.
- Sampling Guidelines: Advises on proper sampling of homogeneous liquid products to ensure representativity according to ISO 607.
Applications
This standard is widely applicable in:
- Surfactant Manufacturing: For quality assurance of sodium secondary alkylsulphates used in detergents, personal care, and industrial cleaning formulations.
- Chemical Analysis Laboratories: Providing standardized analytical methods that produce reproducible and comparable results across international testing facilities.
- Product Development: Assisting R&D teams to characterize and optimize surfactant blends by precise compositional analysis.
- Regulatory Compliance: Facilitating adherence to national and international regulations regarding chemical content and purity.
- Procurement and Inspection: Allowing buyers and inspectors to verify supplier product specifications through standardized test reports.
Related Standards
ISO 895 references and works alongside several other ISO documents to ensure comprehensive surfactant analysis:
