Applies to seamless steel tubes with circular section of non-alloy quality steel. These tubes are provided for general pressure purposes including transporting of pressurized fluids. There are standards and rules permitting the use of these tubes up to a temperature of 350 0C (see annex A). The terms "tube" and "pipe" are synonymous terms. For general technical delivery conditions see ISO 404.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9329-1:1989 specifies technical delivery conditions for seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes - Part 1 focuses on unalloyed steels with specified room-temperature properties. It applies to seamless, circular-section tubes intended for general pressure service, including the transport of pressurized fluids. The standard defines requirements for manufacture, inspection, testing and documentation for tubes used in pressure applications (the terms “tube” and “pipe” are synonymous).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials
- Seamless tubes of non‑alloy (unalloyed) quality steel with defined room-temperature mechanical properties.
- Some application standards permit use of these tubes up to 350 °C (see Annex A).
- Manufacture and condition
- Tubes must be produced by seamless processes and may be hot‑finished or cold‑finished.
- Steels for these tubes shall be killed (no semi‑killed steels).
- Heat‑treatment/delivery conditions (e.g., normalized, annealed) are specified; manufacturer choice unless purchaser specifies.
- Chemical and metallurgical controls
- Ladle (melt) analysis and optional product analysis requirements with permissible deviations; specified chemical limits for steel grades (e.g., TS 360, TS 410, TS 430, TS 500) are given.
- Mechanical properties and tests
- Room‑temperature tensile, yield/proof stress, elongation and bend/flattening tests are specified.
- Test methods and sample locations follow referenced ISO test standards.
- Dimensions, tolerances and appearance
- Outside diameters, wall thicknesses and masses are selected from ISO 4200 tables.
- Tolerances on diameter, wall thickness, ovality and length are specified; surface finish and acceptable imperfections defined.
- Inspection, testing and documentation
- Defines batching rules, sampling, specific and non‑specific inspection.
- Typical test/documents include test reports (TR), inspection certificates (IC, ICP) and inspection reports (IR).
- Weldability and repair
- Steels are generally regarded as weldable; repair by welding allowed by agreement and controlled methods.
Applications and users
- Typical applications: pressure vessels, boilers, heat exchangers, piping for transporting pressurized liquids and gases, and other pressure systems where room‑temperature properties are critical.
- Primary users: tube manufacturers, material purchasers, design and pressure‑equipment engineers, fabricators, inspection authorities and testing laboratories specifying or verifying compliance with ISO 9329-1.
