ISO 9393-1:2004 specifies the test methods for the resistance to internal pressure and the leaktightness of thermoplastics valves for use with cold water or with industrial fluids, excluding gas applications covered by thermoplastics-valve product standards.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9393-1:2004 - "Thermoplastics valves for industrial applications - Pressure test methods and requirements - Part 1: General" defines the general test methods used to assess the resistance to internal pressure and leaktightness of thermoplastics valves used with cold water or industrial fluids (gas applications covered by other product standards are excluded). Part 1 sets out specimen types, conditioning, test apparatus and general procedures; Part 2 covers specific test conditions and numeric requirements.
Key topics
- Scope and classification of tests: four categories - materials tests, shell tests, long-term behaviour tests of complete valves, and seat & packing tests.
- Test specimens: preparation rules for valves with flanges, unions, threaded ends, fusion or solvent-cement joints, compression fittings and elastomeric sealing-ring sockets. For fusion/solvent-cement joints, manufacturer curing times must be observed. When pipe sections are used, the free length shall be at least equal to the pipe outside diameter.
- Conditioning: specimens filled and conditioned for at least 1 hour (water tests: within ±2 °C of test temperature; gas tests: within ±8 °C).
- Test apparatus: pressurizing device per ISO 1167-1 capable of progressive pressure application and steady maintenance; pressure measurement, thermometers and timers. For seat/packing tests using air or nitrogen, the device must apply up to 0.6 MPa (6 bar) and include a temperature-controlled water bath.
- General procedure: connect specimen, remove trapped air, raise pressure progressively (not in less than 30 s), maintain pressure and temperature for the duration specified in ISO 9393-2, then reduce to atmospheric pressure. Specifics for closed-valve (seat) and open/part-open (packing) tests are described, including use of closing torque defined in product standards.
- Reporting & interpretation: requirements for recording results, failures and test conditions are included; Part 2 defines acceptance criteria.
Applications
ISO 9393-1 is used to:
- Validate design strength of thermoplastic valve shells and assemblies
- Assess long-term hydrostatic behaviour of valve materials
- Verify seat and packing leaktightness for industrial fluids
- Support R&D, quality control and product certification programs
- Provide objective test procedures for suppliers, manufacturers and testing laboratories
Who should use it
- Valve manufacturers and designers
- Third‑party testing laboratories and certification bodies
- Quality and compliance engineers specifying industrial piping components
- Procurement and asset owners assessing valve performance for chemical, water treatment and process industries
