ISO 9393-2:2005 specifies the test parameters and conditions for hydrostatic-pressure tests on valves made of the following thermoplastic materials: ABS, PE 80, PE 100, PP-H, PP-B, PP-R, PP-R-GF, PVC-C, PVC-U and PVDF. The tests cover the following aspects: the material used for manufacturing valves; the pressurized valve components; the complete valve.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9393-2:2005, "Thermoplastics valves for industrial applications - Pressure test methods and requirements - Part 2: Test conditions and basic requirements," specifies the test parameters and conditions for hydrostatic-pressure tests on valves made from common thermoplastic materials. The scope covers valves manufactured from ABS, PE (PE 80, PE 100), polypropylene variants (PP-H, PP-B, PP-R, PP-R-GF), PVC (PVC-C, PVC-U) and PVDF. The standard defines how to test the raw material, pressurized valve components (shell), and the complete valve under controlled conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test types covered
- Test conditions
- Test pressures are derived from design stress and nominal pressure (PN) using the standard formula: p_test = (σ_test / σ_design) × PN.
- Test fluids permitted include water or air (water is specified in case of dispute).
- Temperature and duration ranges are specified per material and per test type to reflect real service conditions.
- Special provisions for diaphragm valves (e.g., temperature and maximum pressure limits).
- Acceptance criteria
- A specimen is satisfactory if no leakage, no rupture, and no visible failure occur during the defined test period.
- Tests are considered null and void if external connections or pipes fail; such tests must be repeated on a new specimen.
- Seat and packing tests
- Valve operation during tests must use the torque specified in the applicable product standard.
- Pass criteria: no leakage through the seat or packing during the test period.
Applications and users
ISO 9393-2:2005 is directly applicable to:
- Valve manufacturers of thermoplastic industrial valves for quality control and design verification.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing hydrostatic and endurance testing.
- Design and R&D engineers specifying material selection, pressure ratings, and life expectancy.
- Procurement and QA teams who require objective test methods to verify compliance with pressure ratings.
- System integrators and plant owners who rely on validated valves for safe fluid transport in chemical, water, and process industries.
Using ISO 9393-2 helps ensure consistent, reproducible pressure-testing practices that align valve performance with declared PN ratings and design stresses.
