Abstract
Overview
ISO 9396:1997 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), focusing on plastics and phenolic resins. Specifically, it defines a precise method for determining the gel time of resol-type phenolic resins under specific temperature conditions using an automatic apparatus. This second edition of the standard updates and replaces the initial 1989 version, providing refined procedures and increased accuracy for measuring gel time, a critical property affecting resin processing and application.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Application:
The method applies to liquid resol phenolic resins and solid resol resins with low melting points. It excludes powder resins with very short gel times and those with high solvent content that complicate measurement due to evaporation effects. -
Testing Temperatures:
Gel time measurements are performed at standard temperatures of 100°C, 130°C, and 150°C, ensuring consistent and comparable data across laboratories. -
Automatic Gel Time Apparatus:
The apparatus utilizes a plunger with vertical alternating motion immersed in the resin sample within a regulated temperature bath. The plunger movement cycle lasts approximately 10 seconds, and gel time ends when the resin's viscosity is sufficient to lift the test tube with the plunger. -
Sample Preparation:
Both liquid and solid resin samples are tested as is, with no additional preparation necessary beyond standard weighing. -
Precision and Reliability:
The standard details repeatability and reproducibility criteria, aiming for test result differences of under 8% within the same laboratory and under 20% across different laboratories at 95% confidence. -
Test Reporting Requirements:
Reports must include detailed reference to the ISO 9396 standard, resin identification, gel time averages, test temperature, and plunger frequency.
Applications
-
Quality Control in Resin Manufacturing:
Manufacturers of thermosetting phenolic resins can use ISO 9396:1997 to monitor and control gel time, ensuring consistent processing performance and product properties. -
Material Development and Research:
The standardized test assists researchers in evaluating how formulation changes or catalysts influence resin curing times. -
Process Optimization in Plastics Industry:
Understanding gel time supports optimizing production cycles, molding schedules, and curing parameters for phenolic resin-based composites and molded articles. -
Supplier and Customer Communication:
Suppliers and buyers of phenolic resol resins benefit from a mutually recognized testing method to verify product specifications and suitability for applications.
Related Standards
-
ISO/TC 61 Plastics Committee Standards:
ISO 9396:1997 is part of the broader portfolio of standards developed by ISO/TC 61 focusing on thermosetting plastics, complementing standards on resin characterization and testing. -
Standards on Thermoset Resin Testing:
Other relevant ISO standards provide methodologies for determining thermal properties, viscosity, and curing behavior of thermosetting polymers. -
Chemical and Material Safety Standards:
Testing under ISO 9396 supports compliance with manufacturing and product safety regulations by ensuring predictable resin curing behavior.
