This document specifies the types, structure, dimensions, technical requirements, inspection and designation of single rungs and rungs for dog-step ladders, fitted to the vertical panel or masts of ships or other marine structures.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9519:2023 - Ships and marine technology: Single rungs and rungs for dog-step ladders - specifies the types, structure, dimensions, technical requirements, inspection and designation of single rungs and dog-step ladder rungs fitted to vertical panels or masts on ships and other marine structures. This second edition updates material grades, surface-treatment and inspection requirements and extends the scope and dimensional options for marine ladder rungs.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Classification and types: Defines Type A/B (for panels or masts > 300 mm diameter) and Type C (for masts ≤ 300 mm).
- Structure & dimensions: Presents standard geometries (width, depth, height, bar section length) and theoretical weights (based on ISO 1035-2). Exact dimension tables are provided in the standard.
- Material: Rungs shall be steel meeting ISO 630-2, with minimum grade S235.
- Surface treatment:
- Protective coatings compatible with location.
- Rungs fitted in ballast tanks must meet PSPC performance coating requirements.
- Free edges rounded to R2 mm.
- Hot-dip galvanizing recommended after de‑rusting; coating thickness per ISO 1461.
- Appearance & finish: Rungs must be smooth, free of burrs, dents and cracks; arc and sharp corners must be well formed.
- Tolerances: Width tolerance ±2 mm (referencing ISO 2768-1); weight tolerance not to exceed ±4% of theoretical weight.
- Inspection: Visual checks for surface treatment and appearance; measurement of coating thickness, dimensions and weight to verify tolerances.
- Designation: Standardised delivery-note format (e.g., Rung ISO 9519 - A300–20–280).
Applications and users
ISO 9519:2023 is intended for practical use where safe, durable ladder rungs are required in marine environments:
- Shipbuilders and shipyards specifying and installing fixed ladders and dog-step ladders
- Marine architects and structural designers detailing masts and vertical panels
- Classification societies and flag administrations assessing ladder compliance
- Procurement and asset managers buying replacement rungs or ladder components
- Maintenance and safety teams performing inspections, repairs and repainting
This standard supports safety, corrosion resistance and interchangeability of marine ladder rungs, helping ensure compliance with shipbuilding and onboard safety practices.
