ISO/TS 80004-12:2016 lists terms and definitions relevant to quantum phenomena in nanotechnologies. All of these terms are important for nanotechnologies, but it is to be noted that many of them are not exclusively relevant to the nanoscale and can also be used to some extent to refer to larger scales. The list of terms presented does not claim to provide exhaustive coverage of the whole spectrum of quantum concepts and phenomena in nanotechnology. It covers important phenomena as acknowledged by many stakeholders from academia, industry, etc. ISO/TS 80004-12:2016 is intended to facilitate communication between organizations and individuals in industry and those who interact with them.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TS 80004-12:2016 - Nanotechnologies - Vocabulary - Part 12: Quantum phenomena in nanotechnology is a technical specification that defines terms and definitions relevant to quantum phenomena encountered in nanotechnology. It provides a common, cross-disciplinary vocabulary to improve clarity and communication among researchers, industry, regulators and other stakeholders. The document notes that many terms are not exclusive to the nanoscale, the list is not exhaustive, and it is intended to facilitate interoperability and understanding of nano-enabled products and research.
Key topics
This part of ISO/TS 80004 organizes and defines core quantum concepts and size-dependent phenomena, including:
- General quantum concepts: de Broglie wavelength, quantization, quantized, wave function, quantum number, quantum superposition, quantum coherence, quantum entanglement, qubit.
- Basic quantum effects: quantum tunnelling, Aharonov–Bohm effect, Casimir effect, quantum Hall effect, Coulomb blockade, ballistic and coherent transport.
- Size-dependent effects and structures: quantum confinement, quantum dot, quantum well, quantum wire, quantum heterostructure, superlattice.
- Optical and plasmonic terms: surface plasmon, surface plasmon resonance, photonic crystal, photonic band gap.
- Supplementary material: informative annexes (classical/quantum terms, mapping to applications and products, index and bibliography).
Note: The specification is descriptive (vocabulary-focused) rather than prescriptive; it does not set performance or testing requirements.
Applications and users
ISO/TS 80004-12 is useful for:
- Nanotechnology researchers and educators for consistent terminology in publications and teaching.
- Product developers and designers of nano-enabled devices (quantum dots, NEMS, photonic components, plasmonic sensors) to align terminology across teams.
- Standards writers, regulators and procurement specialists to reduce ambiguity in technical specifications and regulatory filings.
- Interdisciplinary teams (materials scientists, electrical engineers, physicists) needing a common language for design, safety assessment and trade.
Practical examples referenced in the standard:
- Considering Casimir forces in NEMS design.
- Using Coulomb blockade and quantum dots in single-electron devices.
- Applying surface plasmon resonance concepts in nanoscale sensors and photonic crystal design for light management.
Related standards
ISO/TS 80004-12 is one part of the ISO/TS 80004 series (Nanotechnologies - Vocabulary). Related parts include:
- Part 1: Core terms
- Part 2: Nano-objects
- Part 3: Carbon nano-objects
- Part 4: Nanostructured materials
- Part 5: Nano/bio interface
- Part 6: Nano-object characterization
- Part 7: Diagnostics and therapeutics for healthcare
