IEC 61757:2026 defines, classifies, and provides a framework of generic tests or measurement methods for characterizing and specifying fibre optic sensors, including their specific components and subassemblies. The requirements of this document apply to all related fibre optic sensor standards that are part of the IEC 61757 series. Other parts of the IEC 61757 series contain requirements that are specific to sensors that measure particular quantities, and to a particular style or variant of such a fibre optic sensor. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2018. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) expansion of the list of metrological parameters; b) updates of the terms and definitions; c) updates of the normative references and bibliography; d) updates of the technical descriptions in Annex A.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN IEC 61757:2026 - Fibre optic sensors - Generic specification (IEC 61757:2026) - is a European and international standard specifying the framework for defining, classifying, and measuring fibre optic sensors. This standard, developed by SIST and aligned with European and IEC requirements, applies to all fibre optic sensor technologies covered by the IEC 61757 series. The 2026 edition replaces the 2018 version with expanded technical criteria and updated references, enhancing the clarity and utility of fibre optic sensor specification, test methods, and quality assurance.
Fibre optic sensors play a critical role in a wide range of industries by detecting various measurands through changes in light properties within optical fibres or their sensing elements. Clear guidelines on test and classification approaches foster interoperability, reliability, and technical advancement in fibre optic sensing solutions.
Key Topics
Scope and Classification
- Sets out a universal framework for characterizing and specifying fibre optic sensors, as well as their components and subassemblies.
- Applies to all related sensor standards within the IEC 61757 series, supporting both general and sensor-specific documentation.
- Covers classification by measurand (e.g., temperature, pressure, strain), transduction principle (e.g., intensity, phase, polarization modulation), and sensor configuration (point, distributed, integrating).
Technical Updates (2026 Edition)
- Expanded list of metrological parameters: Broader coverage of the measurement characteristics relevant to fibre optic sensors.
- Revised terms and definitions: Enhances clarity and consistency across standards.
- Updated references and bibliography: Aligns with the most current international and European standards.
- Enhanced technical descriptions (Annex A): Illustrative examples for a variety of fibre optic sensor applications.
Quality Assurance
- Specifies test and measurement procedures: Optical, electrical, mechanical, climatic, and environmental tests are clearly outlined.
- Defines requirements for visual inspection, dimensions, weight, and metrological properties.
- Emphasizes marking, labeling, packaging, and documentation for robust traceability and user information.
Applications
Industry Use Cases
- Industrial Automation: Fibre optic sensors monitor proximity, position, strain, and vibration in manufacturing systems and robotics.
- Energy and Infrastructure: Used for temperature, pressure, and current monitoring in power grids, oil & gas pipelines, and civil infrastructure.
- Safety Systems: Deployed in hazardous environments due to immunity to electromagnetic interference and safe operation in explosive atmospheres.
- Environmental Monitoring: Distributed fibre optic sensors measure temperature and strain over long distances for landslide or structural health monitoring.
- Healthcare and Biomedicine: Enable minimally invasive measurements for medical diagnostics and device monitoring.
Practical Value
- Ensures compatibility and interoperability: Standardized test methods allow multi-vendor integration.
- Supports regulatory compliance: Conformity with recognized standards facilitates market access and certification.
- Improves long-term reliability: Quality assurance guidelines reduce field failures and enhance sensor credibility.
