Overview
EN ISO 12185:2024 (CEN adoption of ISO 12185:2024) specifies a laboratory method for the determination of density of crude petroleum, petroleum products and related products using a laboratory density meter with an oscillating U‑tube sensor. The method covers liquids that can be handled as single‑phase at the test temperature and pressure in the range 600 kg/m3 to 1 100 kg/m3. It applies to products of any vapour pressure provided precautions are taken to avoid loss of light components. This standard replaces the earlier edition and extends guidance to a wider range of modern laboratory density meters.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and limits: Density range 600–1 100 kg/m3; not intended for in‑line density meters; single‑phase requirement.
- Principle: Measurement using an oscillating U‑tube sensor, with corrections and procedures to ensure traceable laboratory results.
- Apparatus and accessories: Requirements for the density meter, homogenizer and constant‑temperature bath (see Clauses 5–6).
- Sampling and sample preparation: Guidance for representative sampling and steps to minimise loss of volatiles during handling.
- Apparatus preparation and verification: Test temperature control, cell cleaning, meter verification and adjustment, and meter calibration (Clauses 9 and Annex A).
- Quality control (QC): QC checks added to ensure ongoing instrument performance (Clause 9.5).
- Test procedure and calculation: Standardised procedure for measurement, calculations and reporting (Clauses 10–11).
- Precision: Repeatability and reproducibility statements provided (Clause 13).
Keywords: EN ISO 12185:2024, oscillating U‑tube density meter, density measurement, crude petroleum, laboratory density meter, meter calibration, quality control.
Applications and users
This standard is intended for:
- Petroleum testing laboratories performing routine density determinations for quality control and specification compliance.
- Refineries and blending facilities verifying product density for process control and product metering.
- Custody transfer and commercial testing where accurate laboratory density is required as part of contractual measurement.
- Instrument manufacturers and service providers developing, qualifying or calibrating oscillating U‑tube density meters.
- Standards bodies and technical auditors seeking harmonised methods for inter‑laboratory comparability.
Practical benefits include improved accuracy and repeatability of density results, standardised sampling and calibration practices, and mitigation of density shifts from volatile losses.
