IEC 62211:2017 sets up a broad basis of electric and mechanical criteria of failure test procedures. This document is applicable to inductive components (chokes and transformers) based on magnetically soft materials. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) continuous shock and mechanical shock are integrated in the test conditions; b) the normative references in Table 3 are changed.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62211:2017 - "Inductive components - Reliability management" is an IEC international standard that defines a broad framework of electrical and mechanical test procedures, failure criteria and minimum requirements for the reliability qualification of inductive components (chokes and transformers) made from magnetically soft materials. It covers components built with laminated iron sheets, iron‑powder cores, ferrites, amorphous/crystalline metal band cores and common winding technologies (wire‑wound, multilayer, planar stacks), including discrete and SMD types.
This edition (2017) integrates continuous shock and mechanical shock into the test conditions and updates normative references used in test condition tables.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and component families: Defines how to group parts into representative families by magnetic material, core shape, winding type, termination (PTH, SMD), insulation/encapsulation and accessories.
- Test samples and pre‑treatment:
- Manufacture samples using production tools and materials.
- Magnetic pre‑treatment: demagnetisation to a neutral state (per IEC 61007).
- Mechanical pre‑treatment: mounting on carrier boards where applicable.
- Reflow exposure: multiple reflow cycles for SMD components (per IEC 60068‑2‑58) before electrical testing.
- Failure criteria:
- Defined mechanical and electrical failure criteria (see Tables 1 & 2 in the standard) to determine pass/fail during sequences.
- General failure criteria must be checked at every measurement stage.
- Test conditions and sequences:
- Environmental and mechanical tests referenced to IEC 60068 series (cold, dry heat, vibration, shock, temperature change, damp heat).
- Test sequencing, evaluation and reporting requirements are specified to support qualification and requalification.
- Documentation and reporting: test sample numbering, part/date codes, location of manufacture and data sheet/test specification requirements.
Applications and users
- Who uses IEC 62211:
- Component manufacturers for primary qualification, process change requalification and production monitoring.
- Design and test engineers validating inductive component reliability in electronic designs.
- Procurement and quality teams requesting compliance evidence from suppliers.
- Test labs and certification bodies performing standardized reliability testing.
- Practical applications:
- Qualification of chokes and transformers for power supplies, signal transformers, RF/IF inductors and pulse transformers.
- SMD reliability checks including solder reflow tolerance.
- Defining representative family testing to reduce test matrix while ensuring coverage.
