IEC 62343-1:2016 provides a performance standard of general conditions for dynamic modules. All dynamic modules should satisfy required performance defined in individual performance standards on the general conditions defined in this document. Additional conditions may be included in individual performance standards.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62343-1:2016 defines the general performance conditions for dynamic modules used in optical transmission equipment. It establishes a common set of operating conditions and spectral band references so that individual performance standards can specify specific test requirements against a consistent baseline. Dynamic modules are typically installed in temperature- and humidity-controlled central-office environments; this standard ensures that performance measurements and design verification are comparable across products and vendors.
Key Topics
-
Operating conditions: The standard specifies minimum operating conditions that dynamic modules for commercial use must meet. Key items include:
- Operating temperature range: -5 °C to 70 °C (case temperature). A defined measurement position on the module surface is required when the module emits heat.
- Operating relative humidity: Considered for product specifications.
- Operating vibration: Typical test guidance includes 5 Hz to 100 Hz at 1.0 g (3 mm max amplitude) with a 0.1 octave/min sweep, 3-axis. An optional condition is 100 Hz to 200 Hz at 2.0 g.
- Operating shock: Identified as an optional requirement in performance specifications.
- Maximum input power: To be defined in individual performance standards.
-
Operating wavelength range (spectral bands): IEC 62343-1 references ITU‑T G.694.1 spectral grids and maps the standard spectral bands used in optical systems:
- O-band (Original): 1260–1360 nm
- E-band (Extended): 1360–1460 nm
- S-band (Short wavelength): 1460–1530 nm
- C-band (Conventional): 1530–1565 nm
- L-band (Long wavelength): 1565–1625 nm
- U-band (Ultra long): 1625–1675 nm
-
Storage and absolute maximum ratings (informative): The annex provides typical storage ranges (e.g., -40 °C to 70 °C, 5–85 % RH, absolute humidity ≤ 24 g/kg dry air) and lists minimum absolute rating items such as applied voltage, current, electrical power and input optical power.
Applications
This standard is valuable for:
- Product developers and test engineers performing design verification of dynamic modules.
- System integrators ensuring interoperability and consistent performance across modules in optical transmission equipment.
- Specification authors who need a common test baseline when drafting individual performance standards or product datasheets.
By adopting IEC 62343-1:2016, organizations can reduce ambiguity in test conditions, accelerate validation cycles, and improve cross-vendor compatibility for dynamic optical modules.
