Overview
ISO 10364:2024 - Structural adhesives - Determination of the pot life (working life) of multi‑component adhesives specifies standardized laboratory methods to measure the pot life (working life) of multi‑part adhesives. The fourth edition defines five test procedures to determine whether a mixed adhesive maintains usable properties for the minimum required working time. The methods are broadly applicable to multi‑component systems - especially epoxy and polyurethane adhesives - and can also be applied to some moisture‑curing one‑part systems and non‑structural adhesives. The standard notes that certain acrylic‑based adhesives may not be suitable for these methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Five test methods are specified:
- Method 1 - increase in apparent viscosity (rotational viscometry)
- Method 2 - change in extrusion rate from cartridges
- Method 3 - time to reach a critical reaction temperature
- Method 4 - film formation and drying points using a drying recorder (for low‑viscosity/self‑levelling systems)
- Method 5 - snap time (string‑building characteristic)
- Apparatus and environmental control requirements are listed, including viscometers, extrusion equipment, water baths and conditioning chambers, thermocouples, drying recorders and timing devices.
- Sampling and preparation follow ISO 15605; typical conditioning temperatures and the need for controlled humidity/temperature during testing are emphasized.
- Results reporting: pot life (time) and full test conditions (measuring system, shear conditions, mix ratio, amount mixed, conditioning temperature, etc.) to ensure reproducibility and comparability.
- The standard cautions that different methods may yield different pot life values and therefore selection of the appropriate method must match the adhesive type and intended use.
Practical applications and users
- Quality control and production: verify that adhesive batches meet specified working life for manufacturing or assembly lines.
- Product development and R&D: compare formulations, optimize cure kinetics, and design correct mixing/dispensing procedures.
- Procurement and specification: define minimum pot life requirements for suppliers and contracts.
- Failure analysis and warranty support: reproduce and document working life under controlled conditions.
- Typical users: adhesive manufacturers, independent test laboratories, automotive, aerospace, marine and construction engineers, composite fabricators, and OEM production/quality engineers.
