It addresses measurement distortion caused by deep valleys beneath a finely finished plateau with minimal waviness (a common condition in components such as cylinder liners). The standard modifies the reference line determination so that roughness parameters reflect the functional plateau with reduced valley influence.

Filtering process:

Preliminary filtering of the primary profile using a phase-correct filter in accordance with ISO 11562.

The same filter is applied again to the modified profile to obtain the second mean line, which becomes the reference line.
The reference line is transferred back to the original profile and the roughness profile is obtained by subtracting the reference line from the primary profile.

Measurement conditions:

Traversing direction shall be perpendicular to the direction of lay unless specified otherwise.
Use measuring systems with an external reference (recommended; required for arbitration).
Preferred cut-off wavelength (λc) is 0.8 mm; 2.5 mm may be used only in justified exceptional cases and must be stated in specifications and test results.

Evaluation length: Table-based relationship links chosen cut-off wavelength and evaluation length; users must follow the table in the standard for the correct sampling length.

Applications

Improves reliability of profile-based roughness assessment where deep valleys distort conventional filtering results.

Commonly applied in inspection and quality control of engine cylinder liners, hydraulic parts, seals and other components with a fine plateau and isolated deep valleys.

Enables meaningful use of parameters defined in ISO 13565-2 and ISO 13565-3 for height characterization with minimal distortion.
