Abstract
Overview
ISO 14125:1998 specifies a standardized method for determining the flexural properties of fibre‑reinforced plastic composites using both three‑point (Method A) and four‑point (Method B) flexure tests. The standard defines specimen types and preparation routes (moulded, machined from plates, or from finished laminates), test geometry, instrumentation accuracy, test speeds, conditioning and reporting requirements. It is intended for screening materials and quality control rather than establishing design parameters.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test methods: Three‑point and four‑point loading geometries are described; four‑point loading provides a constant bending moment over the inner span and typically reduces compressive contact stresses.
- Measured properties: Flexural strength, flexural modulus (chord modulus), flexural strain and related quantities; interlaminar shear modulus (G13) is included for laminated materials.
- Specimens: Preferred specimen classes and dimensions are specified for different composite types (e.g., discontinuous‑fibre thermoplastics, fabrics, unidirectional composites). Specimens may be moulded or machined; dimensional tolerances and surface condition requirements are defined.
- Apparatus and accuracy: Test machines shall meet ISO 5893 requirements; load and deflection indicators typically require ±1% full‑scale accuracy. Loading/support radii and span adjustments are specified to control contact stresses.
- Test speeds and tolerances: A range of traverse speeds is given with defined tolerances to ensure reproducibility.
- Procedure and data treatment: Constant‑rate deflection until fracture or a set deformation; calculation methods for nominal flexural stress and modulus (including chord method or regression for computer systems).
- Statistics and reporting: Minimum number of valid specimens (at least five), handling of non‑valid failures (discarding ruptures outside specified span), precision and reporting clauses to ensure comparability.
Applications and typical users
ISO 14125 is used for:
- Material screening in R&D to compare composite formulations and fibre systems (glass, carbon, aramid).
- Quality control in manufacturing of laminates, mouldings and prepregs to verify batch consistency.
- Acceptance testing of semi‑finished or finished composite products where flexural behavior is critical. Typical users include materials engineers, composite manufacturers, test laboratories, quality managers and standards bodies.
