ISO 16067-1:2003 specifies methods for measuring and reporting the spatial resolution of electronic scanners for continuous tone photographic prints. It is applicable to both monochrome and colour print scanners.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 16067-1:2003 - Photography - Spatial resolution measurements of electronic scanners for photographic images - Part 1: Scanners for reflective media - defines standardized methods to measure and report the spatial resolution of electronic print scanners. It covers continuous-tone photographic prints for both monochrome and colour print scanners. Measurements are performed in the digital domain using a specified test chart and computer analysis (not intended for still cameras, video cameras or bi-tonal document scanners).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to scanners for reflective media (photographic prints); part of a two‑part family (Part 2 covers film scanners).
- Test chart requirements
- Reflection test chart based on spectrally neutral, fade‑resistant print material.
- Active chart area ≥ 100 mm; includes grey-scale patches and optional bitonal elements for SFR and limiting resolution testing.
- Grey patches: 20 neutral grey-scale patches with densities defined in Annex A; max patch density ≥ 1.5 × density of central slanted square.
- Target frequency specification: manufacturer should state usable SFR to the spatial frequency where target modulation = 0.2 (cycles/mm and equivalent DPI; DPI = 50.8 × cycles/mm).
- Measurement methods
- Scanner OECF (opto-electronic conversion function): measure and linearize scanner tonal response using grey-scale patches (referenced to ISO 14524).
- Edge SFR (Spatial Frequency Response) using the slanted edge technique: digital algorithm analyses pixel values near slanted edges to compute SFR, enabling measurement beyond the Nyquist limit by sampling across many phases.
- Limiting visual resolution and aliasing evaluation using bitonal elements.
- Test conditions and reporting
- Specifies environmental conditions (temperature, humidity), luminance/colour measurements, linearization, and scanner settings.
- Results presentation formats and required data (OECF curves, resolution/SFR plots) are defined.
- Annexes
- Annex A: OECF test patches; Annex B: SFR algorithm; Annex C: informative guidance on slanted edge analyses for colour spatial registration.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it
- Scanner manufacturers (performance verification), image‑quality test labs, color and imaging R&D, print service providers, procurement/specification writers, and QA teams.
- Why use it
- Standardized benchmarking of spatial resolution, SFR, aliasing behavior and tonal linearity (OECF).
- Supports objective scanner specification, acceptance testing, calibration, and competitive comparison.
- Benefits
- Repeatable, comparable measurements across devices and labs; helps diagnose optical, sensor or processing limits affecting real‑world print scanning.
