This document specifies a method for the calibration of reference blocks to be used for the indirect and daily verification of Rockwell hardness testing machines and indenters, as specified in ISO 6508-2. This document also specifies requirements for Rockwell machines and indenters used for calibrating reference blocks and specifies methods for their calibration and verification. Attention is drawn to the fact that the use of hard metal for ball indenters is considered to be the standard type of Rockwell indenter ball.

Measuring system resolution ±0.0001 mm and expanded uncertainty 0.0002 mm (95% confidence).

Calibration diamond indenter geometry & performance:

Cone included angle 120° ± 0.1° (sectional tolerance ±0.17°).
Tip radius mean 0.200 ± 0.005 mm (sectional tolerance ±0.007 mm).
Generatrix straightness and sphericity tolerances specified; axis inclination ≤ 0.3°.
Performance verification against reference diamond indenters with specified hardness test blocks (mean difference ≤ ±0.4 Rockwell units).

Procedures & documentation: Includes calibration procedure, number/uniformity of indentations, marking, certificates, and validity. Annexes address uniformity, uncertainty, indenter requirements, and control verification.
