Abstract
Overview
ISO 8954-3:1990 is Part 3 of the ISO 8954 vocabulary series and defines terms relating to the sieve analysis of ferroalloys. Prepared by ISO/TC 132 (Ferroalloys), this international vocabulary clarifies the language used in laboratory and plant procedures for particle classification and sieving. Annex A is informative and the part cross-references other standards used for sampling and sieve analysis.
Key Topics
The standard provides formal definitions for common sieve-analysis concepts used in ferroalloy testing and quality control, including:
- Particle / Lump - a discrete coherent part of a ferroalloy regardless of size.
- Particle size (in sieve analysis) - expressed by the smallest sieve aperture a particle has passed and the largest aperture on which it is retained.
- Maximum particle size - linear measure expressed by the square aperture through which 100% of the mass passes; the document notes the convention in ISO 5445/ISO 5454 for maximum size determination.
- Nominal top size / nominal lower size - upper and lower limits of particle-size ranges as used in delivery and technical specifications.
- Charge - quantity of ferroalloy submitted to a sieve test at one time.
- Size fraction, oversize (+X mm), undersize (-Y mm) - methods of designating separated portions after sieving (e.g., -Xmm +Ymm).
- Size distribution - quantitative grouping of particles expressed as percentage mass passing or retained on selected sieves.
- Sieving methods - definitions distinguish hand sieving, assisted hand sieving, mechanical sieving, batch sieving, continuous sieving and hand placing.
These definitions standardize terminology so that laboratories and suppliers share a common understanding of results and specifications.
Applications
ISO 8954-3:1990 is directly applicable to professionals and organizations involved in:
- Laboratory testing and interpretation of sieve analysis results for ferroalloys.
- Material acceptance, inspection and quality control in ferroalloy production and supply chains.
- Specification writing for particle-size ranges in procurement and delivery contracts.
- Training and documentation where consistent terminology for sieving methods and particle fractions is required.
By using the standardized vocabulary, teams reduce ambiguity in test reports, improve comparability of size distribution data, and support traceable quality procedures.
Related Standards
ISO 8954-3 sits within the ISO 8954 vocabulary series. Relevant cross-references and bibliography in Annex A include:
- ISO 3713:1987 - Sampling and preparation of samples (general rules).
- ISO 4551:1987 - Sampling and sieve analysis.
- References to ISO 5445 / ISO 5454 for conventions on maximum particle size.
