The guidance describes methods for obtaining conditions for the successful keeping and transporting of various varieties derived from Brassica oleracea Linnaeus var. botrytis Linnaeus subvar cauliflora A.P. Decandolle. It includes conditions of harvesting and packing, and optimum conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, air circulation, storage life, further requirements for transportation and loading. Limits of application are given in an annex.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 949:1987 - Cauliflowers - Guide to Cold Storage and Refrigerated Transport is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard provides practical guidance for the optimal cold storage and refrigerated transport of cauliflowers (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis subvar cauliflora) intended for both direct consumption and industrial processing. ISO 949:1987 sets out recommended procedures for harvesting, packing, temperature and humidity control, air circulation, and quality maintenance to minimize wastage and maintain product quality during storage and transport.
Key Topics
-
Harvesting and Packing Conditions
- Guidance on ideal harvesting time, emphasizing the importance of picking cauliflowers at optimal maturity and with maximum curd quality.
- Recommendations for pre-cooling cauliflowers immediately after harvest, especially if there will be a delay in transportation to cold storage.
- Suitable packaging types, including wooden crates and waxed corrugated cartons, with recommendations for materials like parchment paper or plastic wraps to retain moisture while allowing adequate ventilation.
-
Optimum Storage and Transport Conditions
- Target storage temperature range of 0°C to 4°C, avoiding freezing to prevent frost damage.
- Maintenance of relative humidity between 90% and 95% to prevent drying out and preserve freshness.
- Proper air circulation to ensure even temperature and humidity throughout storage and transport environments.
-
Loading and Transportation
- Continuous refrigeration is essential during transport, either via mechanical or ice-refrigerated vehicles.
- Detailed guidelines for arranging packages to prevent physical damage and maintain air circulation.
- Procedures for re-icing during long transport periods and preparing loading spaces to the required conditions before transit.
-
Post-Storage Handling
- Instructions for inspection, trimming, and preparation of cauliflowers after storage or transit to remove any affected or yellowed parts and to ensure product quality before consumption or processing.
Applications
ISO 949:1987 is an essential resource for:
- Producers and Agricultural Cooperatives engaged in harvesting and post-harvest handling of cauliflower, seeking to optimize product availability and ensure high quality after storage.
- Cold Store Operators responsible for maintaining proper storage environments for fresh vegetables, particularly cauliflowers, using standardized temperature and humidity controls.
- Logistics and Transport Companies specializing in the distribution of perishable agricultural products, ensuring that refrigerated vehicles and packaging methods meet international standards.
- Food Processors and Retailers who require assurance that raw materials have been stored and transported under optimal conditions to maintain texture, flavor, and safety.
- Quality Control Personnel monitoring produce quality and checking compliance with accepted storage and transportation practices.
Related Standards
Implementing ISO 949:1987 may require reference to other important international standards, including:
- ISO 2169: Fruits and vegetables - Physical conditions in cold stores - Definitions and measurement.
- ISO 6661: Fresh fruits and vegetables - Arrangement of parallelepipedic packages in land transport vehicles.
Adhering to ISO 949:1987 and related standards helps organizations manage the risks associated with perishable goods, reduce post-harvest losses, and deliver cauliflowers to the market in top condition. The standard is adaptable, recognizing the variability in cauliflower varieties and environmental factors, making it a foundational document for cold chain management in the fresh produce sector.
