Overview
ISO 9635-1:2014 - "Agricultural irrigation equipment - Irrigation valves - Part 1: General requirements" defines the construction, performance requirements and test methods for irrigation valves used in agricultural systems. It applies to valves of DN ≥ 8 mm, designed for fully open and fully closed operation but capable of remaining in intermediate positions, and intended for water temperatures up to 60 °C that may contain fertilizers and agricultural chemicals.
This part is the general framework for irrigation valve design, testing and conformity assessment and sits alongside Parts 2–5 (isolating, check, air and control valves).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Materials and elastomers: selection criteria and references to relevant material standards (e.g., ISO 4633 / EN 681-1) to ensure compatibility with water, fertilizers and ageing resistance.
- Nominal size (DN) and pressure ratings (PN): guidance on DN selection and mapping PN to allowable operating pressure (AOP), maximum allowable pressure (MAP) and allowable site test pressure (ASTP).
- Design of shell and obturator: structural safety factors and methods (calculation or experimental) for short- and long-term strength, including plastics behaviour and ISO 9080 considerations.
- Operational limits: water temperature range, maximum water velocity, operating torques (MOT, mST) and endurance in intermediate positions.
- Performance tests: mechanical strength, watertightness, hydraulic characteristics, resistance to chemicals/fertilizers and endurance testing.
- Conformity assessment: type tests, production process control, quality system requirements.
- Marking and packaging: requirements for traceability, identification and safe transport.
- Normative test methods (Annexes A–G): detailed test procedures for internal pressure, obturator differential pressure, bending, chemical resistance, seat tightness, etc.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 9635-1:2014 is used by:
- Valve manufacturers - for design, material selection and type testing to meet irrigation-specific requirements.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized performance and endurance tests.
- Irrigation system designers and specifiers - to select valves with appropriate DN, PN and chemical compatibility.
- Procurement, installers and asset managers - to verify marking, documentation and conformity for agricultural projects.
- R&D and quality assurance teams - for product development and lifecycle validation.
