Measurement system: Thermocouple sampling and digitization (computer technique) or Y–t/X–Y recorder with electronic differentiator. Minimum sampling frequency of 20 Hz is required when using digital acquisition. Differentiator and recorder performance and calibration requirements are specified to control bias, linearity and repeatability.

Reference quenching fluid: A straight‑run, high‑viscosity‑index paraffinic mineral oil (additive‑free) is recommended for probe cross‑checks; storage and renewal rules apply (renew after 200 quenches or two years, whichever is sooner).

Probe conditioning and maintenance: Initial conditioning via dummy quenches, cleaning procedures, and reconditioning criteria (e.g., recondition when maximum cooling rate deviates by > ±5% from conditioned value).
