Overview
ISO/IEC 10164-12:1994 - Information technology - Open Systems Interconnection - Systems Management: Test Management Function (identical to ITU‑T X.745) defines a standardized test management function in the OSI application layer for use in centralized or decentralized systems management environments. It provides a model, generic definitions, service and protocol specifications, and conformance requirements to enable applications (managers and agents) to initiate, control and report on tests of managed objects and services.
The standard defines the behaviour and data structures needed to support test invocations (instances of tests), but it does not prescribe implementation techniques, specific test details or a methodology for conformance testing.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Test model and terminology: clear definitions for concepts such as test invocation, test session, test object (TO), managed object referring to test (MORT), test conductor, test performer, test action request receiver (TARR), controlled vs uncontrolled tests, and intrusive vs non‑intrusive tests.
- Generic object classes and attributes: defines object classes, attribute types, action types, notification types, packages and parameters following the SMI/managed object templates approach.
- Service definitions: specifies the CMIS/management services required to request, control and obtain test results, including solicited (TO attributes) and unsolicited (TO notifications) reporting.
- Protocol specification: describes the protocol elements and abstract syntax needed to identify and negotiate the test functional unit in management associations.
- Relationships and conformance: details how the test function integrates with other systems management functions, SMI operations/notifications, and sets out conformance requirements for implementations.
- Annexes: includes an integral annex on management information definitions and an informative annex with examples.
Applications and Users
Who benefits from ISO/IEC 10164-12:
- Network and systems management architects designing OSI-based management solutions.
- Software and device vendors implementing management agents, managers, or test automation modules.
- Telecommunications operators and IT administrators who need standardized test invocation, monitoring and reporting mechanisms across heterogeneous systems.
- Test tool and monitoring product developers implementing standardized test objects and notifications for diagnostics and service assurance.
Practical uses include standardized test orchestration, automated diagnostics, remote validation of managed objects, and integration of test capabilities into larger management frameworks.
