Specifies the coded representation of high quality audio for storage media and the method for decoding of high quality audio signals. Is intended for application to digital storage media providing a total continuous transfer rate of about 1,5 Mbit/s for both audio and video bitstreams, such as CD, DAT and magnetic hard disc, and for sampling rates of 32 kHz, 44,1 kHz, and 48 kHz.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 11172-3:1993 (MPEG Audio)
ISO/IEC 11172-3:1993 defines the coded representation and decoding method for high‑quality audio intended for digital storage media operating at a total continuous transfer rate of about 1.5 Mbit/s (for audio + video). Common target media include CD, DAT, and magnetic hard disk. The standard specifies audio bitstream syntax, decoder behavior and supports sampling rates of 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. Encoders are not standardized (their internal algorithms may vary) but the output bitstream and decoder requirements are normative.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Bitstream and decoder specification: Defines the coded audio bitstream syntax and the normative decoding process (see clause 2.4).
- Layers I, II and III: Three coding layers with increasing complexity and compression efficiency.
- Layer I: 32 subbands, block companding, ~19 ms minimum delay.
- Layer II: enhanced bit allocation and framing, ~35 ms minimum delay.
- Layer III: hybrid filterbank, higher frequency resolution, nonuniform quantizer, entropy coding, ~59 ms minimum delay.
- Layer compatibility: A Layer N decoder must decode Layer N and all layers below N.
- Psychoacoustic control: Use of psychoacoustic models for adaptive bit allocation and noise shaping (see informative annex on psychoacoustics).
- Channel modes: Single, dual‑channel, stereo and Joint Stereo (reduces redundancy/irrelevancy between L/R).
- Error handling & robustness: Bit sensitivity, error concealment, optional CRC/error detection and recommendations for storage and retrieval.
- Storage/system integration: Guidance for multiplexing with video/system streams (ISO/IEC 11172-1) and addressable edit points.
- Normative sampling rates: 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz.
- Informative annexes: Diagrams, encoding process, psychoacoustic models, error sensitivity, joint stereo coding and list of patent holders.
Practical applications and users
- Audio codec implementers building decoders and encoder-conformant bitstreams (MPEG Audio players, embedded decoders).
- Consumer electronics manufacturers producing CD/DAT/portable players, set‑top boxes, and media players.
- Software developers (audio playback libraries, multimedia frameworks) needing to conform to MPEG Audio bitstream/decoder rules.
- Broadcasters and storage system designers integrating compressed audio into multiplexed media streams.
- Standards bodies and testing labs for compliance and interoperability testing.
